Whistler--worth the trip from Vancouver?

We are planning our first trip to Vancouver for this summer. Would Whistler be worth a day trip? We have a car but didn't know if there is a better nearby location for scenery/mountains etc. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

How long will you have in Vancouver?

Whistler is certainly worth the day trip, especially if you actually get up to the top of Whistler mountain and go on a hike. But the beauty of a daytrip to Whistler is the scenery on the drive along the way. The drive takes you along the side of the Coast Mountain range where they jet up from the Howe Sound fjord. On a clear day you can see the mountain ranges up along the distant coastline, and the islands on the horizon.

There are also many provincial parks and scenic lookouts easily accessible by car from Hwy 99 - the highway the connects Vancouver to Whistler.

Shannon Falls is always one I'd recommend:

Garibaldi Provincial Park, for example is another one: http://www.garibaldipark.com

If you're looking for a good hike, there's the Stawamus Chief just outside of Squamish. Squamish is a town located half way between Vancouver and Whistler:

You can head even north of Whistler beyond the town of Pemberton to Joffre Lakes Provincial Park which is known for its beautiful turquoise glacial lakes:

In this case, the BC Parks Board's website is an excellent source, especially if you use their map of the Vancouver-Whistler corridor to get an idea of what there is to see and do along the way.

Here are the provincial parks around Vancouver: …gov.bc.ca/bcparks/…vancouver.html

Here are the provincial parks around Whistler:

…gov.bc.ca/bcparks/…pemberton.html

If you click on the parks on the map, it leads you to the official website for each park, detailing the location, hiking trails, how to get there, what there is to do, etc.

I should also add, when you're in Vancouver, if you visit the Tourism Vancouver tourist info centre at 200 Burrard Street (the corner of Burrard and Cordova, downtown) - you can pick up a really good magazine which is either called the "Sea to Sky" or the "Highway 99" - I forget (and it doesn't seem to have a website either). But it's a magazine that focuses on absolutely everything there is to see and do along that highway stretch, complete with detailed maps and all the lookout points. It would be handy to have if you decide to go to Whistler.
