Or should I say, is there any time of the year that ISN'T recommended to visit Tofino?
We ended up going in mid-October 2011 and it was wonderful. Obviously not as warm as the summer months, but seems we were still ahead of the storm season with only a couple of days of heavy rain, but otherwise very pleasant weather. We did a lot of hiking, beach walking, driving and relaxing. Had the best time, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
In the summer there is lots more to do. Whale watching, bear watching kayaking, fishing. More is open too. In the winter there is less to do, but still stuff to keep you occupied for a couple of days. Hiking, storm watching, galleries, the Wickaninnish Interpretive centre (or whatever it is called now).
Surfing can be done at all times of the year, but in the winter there are days when it is too dangerous.
To avoid crowds yet still capture the summer activities, try the "shoulder" months of June and September. Of the two, June will be rainier.
Depends on what you are looking to experience. If you're into the sun and warmth, the June to September is nice. If you are into watching the pounding surf and high winds from the comfort of a beach home with a hot tub, winter is amazing. Less people in the winter months too, if you're into the romantic seclusion. Winter is my favorite time of year for Tofino. The rainforest trails are free in the winter and are spectacular any time of year.
FYI for future readers of this thread - see post #11. OP visited Tofino in October 2011 and happily had a wonderful time. (IOW, it's an "old" thread.)Edited: 11:38 pm, December 28, 2012
