where to stay and what to do in the south okanagan

My wife and and I are an active early retired couple who love to walk each day (6m/9km on fairly flat terrain is ideal). We are visiting BC in the last 2 weeks in may and have booked the first week in Vancouver. The second week was going to be on Vancouver Island but we are now planning the Okanagan following advice on TA.

A few questions:

- ideally we will rent a vacation rental but are undecided where this should be - Penticton, Okanagan Falls and Naramata look possibilities but we have no idea what would be best for us. Views please

- Will there be enough for us to do for a week? Wineries will have limited appeal because we are going to Cape Winelands in South africa in April

- Is the weather normally settled at that time of year?

- should we consider reducing our time in Okanagan so that we could spend a few days in Manning Provincial park?

Thanks in anticipation to all you knowledgeable locals

Personally, I think if you are coming all the way from the UK, you shouldn't miss Vancouver Island. The Okanagan should be nice in May, although you may get some rain. My favourite place is Osoyoos which is about 1.5 hrs drive south from Penticton - it is one of the driest areas in all of Canada. It is a very small community (wine country!). Sorry, can't comment on the other places you mentioned.

Manning Park is nice, but a couple days there is plenty.

I think there is just so much more to see and do on Vancouver Island as it has everything from beaches to museums (depending on where you go on the island).

Just curious why you changed your mind?

Hope that helps.

Thanks Reflections. It is just that I am really confused about where to go on the Island. That coupled with the logistics of ferries put me off but I had been wondering whether it was the right decision and you confirmed that I should think again.

I have therefore submitted a post on the Vancouver Island forum asking for help with an itinerary for 8 days. Any suggestions you have would be very very welcome

Greetings from the Sunny Okanagan!

You really have quite a dilemma on your hands. To have only 2 weeks in Beautiful British Columbia certainly limits a person and the ability to see it all.

I do agree that the Island is a great place to see. In May it could still be a little cool and rainy but then again...it could be very nice. I've heard that the weather is actually comparable to the UK.

On the Island there are countless things to do...Victoria is beautiful and very walker friendly...Buschart Gardens are stunning...if you can access the West coast of the Island there is Tofino and Ucluelet which are stunning and great for beach combing.

Victoria is of course the capial city of BC and the Parliment Buildings are sorta neat...they're lit up at night.

The BC Museum is Fantastic. It is (I think) 6 floors and is very interesting.

So there's lots to do on the Island.

Now the Okanagan...You don't mention whether you have a vechile or not. Okanagan Falls is a very small community...beautiful on Lake Skaha, very quiet and tranquil. Not much to do but relax. Penticton is a larger centre with all the shopping, beaches, casino, etc. It is still relatively quiet and lots and lots of walking. Penticton is situation between Lakes Okanagan and Skaha (OK Falls is only about 15 mins South) Naramata again is small and out of the way on Lake Okanagan ...it is about 10 mins NE of Penticton.

In May the weather is generally pretty good but can still be cool...or sometmes it can be really hot! The Okanagan is Wine Country supreme. Like Victoria and other parts of the Island tourism is one of the main industries.

I'm sure every thing now is about as clear as mud...such a difficult decision to make. The thing is I guess that your time is limited and you simply will have to come back to see whatever it is that you end up missing.

Safe travels to you.
