Sleep in the car in Kelowna on the way from Banff to Vancouv

We're travelling from Vancouver to Jasper, down to Banff and then back to Vancouver over 10 days from this weekend. For the long drive home from Banff to Vancouver, we were planning on stopping in Kelowna and "camping" in the car if possible. We've slept in the back of the car before, and so are not worried about that aspect, however just wanted to make sure there would be places to park the car for the night in Kelowna!

Just wondering if any locals have suggestions for good/safe/quiet places for us to spend the night? We don't require any facilities, just a safe place to stop for the night.

Thanks so much in advance!

Walmart parking lot maybe.

I would book into a Provincial park. They aren't expensive and there are lots of them around the Kelowna area. More pleasant than a parking lot, and a bit safer too. Less likely to be hassled by the police in the middle of the night if you are camping legally.

For free, legal camping, check out the Forestry sites.

They tend to be a little more remote, but there's still some basic toilet and water facilities.

If you wanted to do camping, you might want to consider using a provincial park that allows car/vehicle camping, and then you might want to do it that way. There are lots of provincial parks in that general area that you might want to take advantage of. I believe the following provincial parks have these options:

Bear Creek

Fintry

Okanagan Lake

These are some options for you. You should consider going to the bc parks website at http://www.bcparks.ca and then go to alphabetical listings, and look these parks up. They are all vehicle accessible. They will tell you the dates that the campgrounds are open to. This is just a suggestion that I have.

Or the truly basic option: Pull off the highway onto a gravel road somewhere, find a turnout, tilt the seats back, and ZZZ.

That's legal (except in national parks), and done all the time.

Always see RV's at Walmart. Three there last night.

Thanks all for your suggestions, I think we will try and find a gravel pullout and hope for the best! Appreciate it =)

TO ANGET123,

<< Didn't realise it was legal! >>

You did the right thing by asking...

It certainly isn't legal everywhere in Canada (which catches some Travellers by surprise)...

Many a story about folks here in "the East" who have found themselves woken up in the middle of night either road-side or in the WalMart Parking Lots... and being told to MOVE ON !!

Nothing like a Police Officer and a bright flashlight to mess up your life in the middle of the night.

Cheers!
