Travel plans aug /sept 2014

I would like some advise or useful comments on our planned holiday this year. We are staying with family in Edmonton but want to travel too. We are thinking of spending 13 days traveling starting on August 28th.

28th August Flight Edmonton to vancouver

Whilst in Vancouver, we plan to visit Victoria, ( day trip to whistler if it's possible yet to research )

Hire bikes, leisurely cycle & generally see Vancouver

2nd Sept pick up a hire car, we would have left a day earlier but wanted to avoid travelling on labour day, is this a good idea?? Either spend 2days getting to Banff going via Kelowna & Revelstoke or have just 1 overnight stay but not sure which place? My husband will be driving but he won't want to miss the scenery and we will probably stop a few times as he is a amateur photographer . We can spend longer ?

4th Sept arrive Banff 4nights

8th Sept lake Louise 1night??? we want to do lake louise , Should we just do a day trip to lake Louise or stay over ?

9th Sept arrive Jasper for 4nights

13th Sept return to Edmonton

We can really do whatever we want but don't want to miss out on anything because this visit is a one off so we need to make the most of it. I was wondering should we be spending a bit longer in BC ? And a bit less in the Rockies

Any tips would be much appreciated,

Thank you

Your plan looks very good. Yes, Sept 2nd is a good choice to start out.

I'm going to suggest 2 nights on the way to Banff. I would say drive Hwy 3 to Penticton for 1 night. Hwy 5 and 97C is more of a conveyor belt highway for quick travel to Kelowna and the interior of the province. Then carry on to Revelstoke for 1 night. Take one of the Jasper nights for this, leaving 3 nights there.

The Crowsnest Highway 3, with links to info about the towns at the end of the article:

You want to do LL, so stay one night. It would be a delight for you to be there after the tour buses leave for the day and then again in the morning before they disgorge their passengers. I like your plan. Carry on.

Thank you mufti for your reply, time wise by doing Vancouver to Banff in 2 days will hopefully mean we get to see more and stop more often. Do you know how long the journeys will be with no stops for example

Vancouver to Penticton

Penticton to Revelstoke

Revelstoke to Banff

Thanks again

hi

This is a link for car hire with no drop off fees http://www.canadianaffair.com/en/car-hire/

Actually leaving Sept01 is not bad since you are leaving town and not crossing the border. The traffic from Vancouver to Chilliwack is always busy regardless of time you leave.

Labour day weekend is not a really busy weekend in Penticton; most families stay close to home because of school start.

If you take #3 these are stops along the way for photo ops. There is the Hope Rock slide; some viewpoints on the side of the road going up to Manning Park and going down. (narrow mountain road).

Then as you come into Hedley look for remnants from gold mining days on the side of the hill facing you as you drive east;

at Twin Lakes you could detour to see the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory at White Lake. The road to White Lake is rural. Signage is not the best from the Twin Lakes turn off. You need to pay attention as there are a couple of turns that can easily be missed. like these 2 spots http://goo.gl/maps/Q9ItC and http://goo.gl/maps/5goyz

this is the route from Vancouver to Penticton with viewing stops http://goo.gl/maps/bz5HS

cheers

You would be doing the journey to Banff in 3 days, 2 nights if you follow the suggestion I made.

Van > Penticton = 5 hours

Penticton > Revy = 3.5 hours

Revy > Banff = 3.5 hours

Map with driving route, distances and times in the left side bar: http://goo.gl/maps/eXF0g

Banff to Jasper is about 3 hours drive, but most people spend the whole day, up to 10 hours, to see all the attractions along the Icefields Parkway. Some take a packed lunch to miss the line ups at the few cafeteria/restaurants half way.

It looks as though you will have 4 nights in Vancouver, so 3 full days. A day trip to Whistler takes 2 hours up, maybe 3-4 hours there, and 2 hours down. Pacific Coash Lines. Rocky Mountaineer.

A trip to Victoria will take 4 hours downtown to downtown by land/ferry and 4 hours back. The day can be 13 hours long. A day tour can be had from Landsea Tours. An independent journey can be had with Pacific Coach Lines and you would likely want to stay one night. Then on the second day, coming back from Victoria you could take their Butchart Gardens en route to Vancouver option departing Vic at 1 pm. A nice way to see the gardens without any doubling back from Victoria. But Vancouver is good for 4 nights, just FYI.
