rv camping late August along hwy 97 North

Am looking for advise on ideas for our trip up hwy 97 to hwy 1 and into the Banff area. We are leaving S. Calif. August 18 and have reservations at Lake Louise on the August 24th. I am hoping to enter Canada around the 21st and take three days to get to L.L.

Web sites have been confusing to me as I am getting "closed" a lot. Are these campgrounds closed this early in the season? There are three RVs in our group, 32' and 36'. Thanks for your help.

August is super busy for camping here. And if you checking the provincial campsites, they may very well be full, but not "closed".

Where are you planning on crossing the border?

http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/ Here is the link for the Government sites. They do NOT have any hook ups for electricity. A lot of them will have a sani dump though. There will be campsites that are reservable, and a few first come, first served sites as well.

Lots of private rv sites throughout the province as well, if you are looking for hookups for power.

Just a thought... wondering if some of these sites are still closed due to the flooding????

hi

not sure where you are starting from so hard to give advise on the 4 days you think it is going to take to get to Osoyoos on the Canadian border; which is on Highway 97; so will give recommendations on the Canadian side.

Your first stop in Canada should be in Penticton where you will find lots of RV sites on August 21 or 22. I recommend that you stay for 2 days to visit the wineries etc...then drive to Lake Louise. It will be a long day but the 2 days in the Okanagan will be worth it.

you may want to post on the Road Trip Forum for the US section of your trip. Lots of RV travelers on that forum.

Thank you for the recommendation of Penticton, I will probably follow it. I am only looking for this type of advise, camping and the road from Osoyoos to Lake Louise. Do you think we will need reservations or will there be availability in the area?

I think you should reserve. With three RVs, and given the time of year, there may very well be places that are already booked solid.

hi

Since i drive by quite a few RV parks in the Penticton area on a daily basis and live behind one; I get to observe rather than surmise. The only weekend when the RV parks are full is the week before the August long weekend which is called BC Day(first weekend in August); and the week after. Anytime before or after these dates there is always a private park that has vacant spots. The Provincial and National parks are another matter since they usually offer better sites and/or some really interesting features.

so I would make a list of the RV parks close to where you think you are going to be and call when you get close, to make sure they have room instead of driving around town looking for them. AAA, if you are a member, has Tour Books with all the info you would need.

Thanks all for the advise. I would like to stay in the Penticton area but so far have struck out. Provincial parks are full and I contacted two private campgrounds, Banbury and Park Royal and they are also full. I am looking for Aug. 21 and 22, and other suggestions?

hi

http://www.wrightsbeachcamp.com/ first one driving into Penticton - they have a section that is new with no trees; ask for the lower section when you call; the upper part if desperate only. they have direct access to the lake.

http://www.southbeachgardens.com/ across the street from Skaha Lake. so is http://www.oxbowrvresort.com/

or you can try http://www.campalong.com/ in Kaleden, 7 km south of Penticton; 8 min to town. this one has trees. http://goo.gl/maps/UvX7b

or you can go to Ilhahie recently renamed Summerland Beach RV which is why it took a while to find http://summerlandbeachrv.com/?page_id=12 which is about 10 min north of Penticton.
