Current weather

How has the weather been this month? I'm a little worried because the extended forecast shows rain for like 4 days in a row (of course starting on the 20th when we get there). Does it sometimes rain all day or is it more like for a short period of time and then clear up? All our plans are for outdoors! :-/

I don't know which forecast you saw, but it definitely wasn't Environment Canada's:

weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/…ab-70_metric_e.html

As you see, Environment Canada is currently forecasting just showers, not rain (which is an all-day event, in Environment Canada's jargon).

Also, weather forecasts for more than 3 days out are quite unreliable, so don't be overly concerned if your trip starts on the 20th. Just keep an eye on the forecast when it gets closer to your departure date. And don't let the rain get you down - check this TripAdvisor Traveller Article for ideas on what to do on rainy days in the mountains:

The weather forecasts here are very unreliable - I don't trust it more than two or three days in advance, and even from one day to the next, it is often significantly "off". It rarely rains all day here; you are more likely to see an occasional, localized shower. We have had very variable weather here so far this spring and summer - cooler than normal, and alternating between sunny periods, cloudy periods, and showers, sometimes a few times a day. The often-used expression is very true for the Rockies: "If you don't like the weather, wait five (fifteen?) minutes." Bring clothing you can layer, and a waterproof/water-resistant jacket (a "must" for hiking, which I see from your past posts is a big part of your plans), and you will be prepared for almost anything. Also, bring insect repellent (or buy it here) - you will need it in some areas; it is definitely mosquito season!

Thanks for the replies. It is reassuring knowing it isn't likely to rain all day. Maybe it will warm up a little by the end of next week. :-). One other question I had is what attractions should we avoid on the weekends (or time of day) due to crowds? Maligne canyon, tramway, miette hot springs, sunwapta falls plus hiking are what we are planning on.

We're into high season now, so there really isn't a big difference between week days and weekends. Weekends can be a bit busier, especially if the weather forecast is good, with people up from the city (the campgrounds get noticeably busier then). Any of the paid attractions (hot springs, tramway) will be busy from late morning through late afternoon, on any day of the week, so plan these for early or late in the day. Also, the parking lot at Mt. Edith Cavell is not that big, so it's best to do this early or late. The Valley of the Five Lakes hike is also very popular and the same warning applies to the parking lot there.
