Family / Ski Lodging Near Jasper

I am looking for self catering accommodation - 4 adults 4 children aged 2 - 15 just after christmas for one week with reasonably easy access to ski slopes.

Travelling from Europe to meet Canadian relatives - we are looking for our own space rather than staying in Hotels

Has anyone any suggestions?

We just love Canada

Because of national park regulations, there are no on-hill accommodations at Marmot Basin. All accommodations are located in the town of Jasper, about a 25 minute drive from the hill.

A directory of hotels & motels can be found at the website of Jasper Tourism: www.jaspercanadianrockies.com .

The website of the Jasper Home Accommodation Association, which has as its members all of the private home accommodations (PHAs) and B&Bs in Jasper is at: www.stayinjasper.com .

Eight is the maximum number of guests that a home accommodation is permitted to have as guests (more than that require a higher level of fire safety building code requirements, like commercial fire alarms, indoor sprinklers etc.... stuff you don't normally have in homes); there are a few PHAs that can take eight guests, and the easiest way to find them is to use the "number of guests=8" search option. The rates quoted are per double room, but most of these places have a rate for when you book the entire suite. The maximum number of licensed bedrooms per home is three - so commonly, an accommodation that can take eight would have three double bedrooms, plus a pull-out bed in the living room.

If you want a home accommodation, you may have your work cut out for you; you best try booking asap. There is a pipeline construction project going through the park this winter, and there are several hundred temporary workers (and some with families) living in town. They have snapped up a lot of the available suites. In addition, the time you are coming is in high demand.

Because there are so many home accommodations in town (150+ although about half are closed in the winter, and as mentioned, many are unavailable to visitors this winter), if you can't find one home that can take all of you, you might want to try booking two neighbouring homes (sounds like your group is two families?). Most residential blocks have several home accommodations and there is a much greater selection of accommodations that can accommodate four guests. The website I gave earlier has a map page with the areas in town colour-coded; clicking on one of the blocks of colour will bring up the listings for that area. Searching on the ones that advertise an off season rate (all rates are for a single room, double occupancy) will bring you the ones that are open in the winter - although Christmas may not be at those rates. You can find two that are close together by the street addresses, or, once you find one you are interested, contact the host and see if they can assist you with referrals to some of their neighbours.

Good luck - and don't delay.... it's not too early NOW to be making enquiries... others are.
