trip to Lake Louise

Well it is only 7 days before we leave for our 5 week trip through Canada, after my post in november we have taken Judys advice and rented a car in Jasper for our 3 night stop of the train.

we want to do the canyon and hot springs one day but would still like to go to lake Louise the 2nd day is this going to be a full day trip plus could we visit some other vistas on the way, dont mind driving all day.

Thanks again

The route from Jasper to Lake Louise is the Icefields Parkway. It's one of the most scenic routes in North America, and most people plan to spend the whole day driving it, with numerous stops along the way. Do make sure to bring a box lunch, though; there are few meal stops on the road, and those that exist are overpriced and don't offer much in the way of food. With a box lunch, you can have a picnic at the scenic stop of your choice. Likewise, you will want to fuel before leaving Jasper; there's only one fuel stop (Saskatchewan River Crossing, halfway point), and the gas there is very pricy.

We got to Lake Louise about five in the afternoon and were expecting it to be quieter by this time. How wrong we were! Still overrun with coach tours and rather spoilt the experience. My husband visited at seven the next morning for fantastic photos and four other tourists!! So if you want to see it at it's best and can make this early trip i would advise it. While you are in the area make sure to visit Moraine Lake just round the hill, much quieter and maybe even more scenic in a natural sort of way. I'm SO jealous of you, can't wait to go back to Canada!!!

Hi merc43,

Here is a suggested itinerary for a 3-night VIA Rail layover taken from this TripAdvisor page:

Day 1

Arrive at Jasper Train Station.

Collect rental car.

Buy national parks pass from Visitor Information Centre in Jasper townsite.

Drive south on Icefields Parkway (Hwy #93) to Lake Louise (3 hours, not counting stops).

Overnight in Lake Louise.

Day 2

From your base in Lake Louise, visit:

* Moraine Lake (14 km or 9 miles from Lake Louise)

* the lake of Lake Louise (5 km or 3 miles from the village of Lake Louise)

* Banff townsite (60 km or 38 miles from Lake Louise).

Day 3

Drive west of Lake Louise on the TransCanada Highway (Hwy #1) and visit Takakkaw Falls in nearby Yoho National Park .

Return almost all the way to Lake Louise , and turn north on the Icefields Parkway (Hwy #93).

This time stop at some of the scenic lookout points along the Icefields Parkway . At a minimum, stop at Peyto Lake , the Columbia Icefields, Sunwapta Falls and Athabasca Falls. While you’re at the Columbia Icefields you may want to ride the Ice Explorer onto the Athabasca Glacier.

Overnight in Jasper townsite.

Day 4

Visit Maligne Canyon (11 km or 7 miles from Jasper townsite).

Have lunch.

Return your rental car in Jasper townsite.

Go to Jasper Station so that you can resume your VIA Rail journey.
