What to do?

I am going to Edmonton for a conference in April, and have a while afternoon to kill. What is the one thing to see, with limited time like this? Would it be the West Edmonton Mall? What would be that one thing? Thanks

Well, honestly as a resident of the city, a mall is a mall. This one is just bigger and busier. My top choices besides the mall would be:

1. Whyte Ave- a historic neighbourhood on the south side of the river. Has funky shops, bars and restaurants, a few old art house style movie theatres, and is really close to taking a walk along the top of the river valley (Saskatchewan Drive). It's also kind of close to the university campus, and has good public transportation in and out (if that's a factor).

2. Fort Edmonton- Edmonton was originally settled as a fur trading town, and this is a sort of living museum of the city's history. There are also restaurants here, and it's right in the river valley so the surroundings are really pretty. Also, the John Janzen Nature centre is right next door- it's cool to see if you're there anyway.

3. The "Downtown Tour"- an afternoon spent downtown- you could check out the legislature (go on the tour and stand in the magic spot, it's VERY cool), city hall, the Winspear Centre, shopping, good restaurants and bars (I really like Eastside in the Citadel) the library. There's even a casino if that's what floats your boat. Just a word of warning that parking is expensive and Edmonton parking enforcers are brutal and cruel. Maybe cab it or something else if you can.

PM me if you like and I'll give you more tips!!

If your trip brings you here in late April - with snow gone I hope - you could go biking through the river valley.

There is Whyte Avenue on a cloudy but windless day.

Take a driving tour of some of the city, including the various parks.

Take a walking tour of the Legislature grounds - flowers won't be out yet though.
