will I still be able to use my mobile phone in Canada or do I need to buy a Canadian sim card.thanks

You probably can use your phone in Canada, but check with your provider on their international charges and roaming etc. If they charge a huge sum, you might be better off buying a Canadian SIM card (if your phone is unlocked).

I'm guessing that your mobile service provider in Scotland won't have service here in Canada, and at the very least, you'll need a SIM card (if the phone is compatible with Canadian networks) or possibly even a new phone.
