lake louise accommodation

My husband and I are visiting Banff for 4 days and Lake Louise for 2 in April.

We will probably stay at a b & b (probably the Banff Boutique Inn) in Banff.

However, we do not know whether to stay in The Post Hotel, Lake Louise and the Fairmont Hotel Lake Louise.

Any advice or recommendations would be great appreciated.

Thanks and kind regards,

Jean O'Donoghue

Maggiemae since you have lived in the area for so long I thought you may be able to help me please. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenage children travelling from the UK for a 2 week holiday to canada, sanfrancisco, LA and Las Vegas. Our itinerary is something like this; fly into Vancouver and see surrounding areas for 4 days, fly to SF for 2 nights, fly to LA for 2 nights, fly to Las vegas for 2 nights and finally fly to Calgary and see surrounding area and fly back to UK from Calgary. My husband says its probably best we do Canada then enter US and fly back from US. But we can get direct flights to and from Canada but have to change if it is US. What do you think? We hope to hire a car and drive in Canada both visits or is it best to take other modes of transport? What are the must see surrounding areas in Vancouver and Calgary? We are not keen on camping or hiking. Please also suggest places to stay in these areas. Thanks in advance. Nams

I would suggest you start a new topic as your post is not really relevant to the original topic and may be missed by people who can help. It is also helpful to know when you plan to come...

You are doing a pretty whirlwind tour. Frankly, I would fly to the US, do the US bit and then go on to Canada. You will have to connect at some point anyway, and it's usually pretty smooth if booked through the airline/codeshare.

I think you may want to reconsider how many stops you are making - with flights, you are basically going to lose at least half a day once you factor in time for transport, check in, security, flight, retrieving luggage. Is there a specific reason you want to hit LA, Vegas and San Francisco. Remember that the teenagers will not be allowed into the casinos in Vegas (drinking and gambling age is 21). Everyone has their own interests, but you don't want to spend your whole vacation on planes. Vegas airport is small, but LA and SFO are large and will take time to get to and navigate.

In Calgary (the only relevant part to this forum), you are fine in the city without a car, but to get to the Rockies, you really need a car. Though you can take a shuttle bus to Banff or Lake Louise. Around Calgary, it's the Rockies you want to see - they are why people come to visit the area. Even you aren't big on hiking or camping, you can do some fun walks, canoe, kayak, rock climb, eat good food, shop, see wildlife etc. With only a few days, you probably are best staying in Banff, about an hour and a bit outside of Calgary. From there, you can do lots of activities, shop, go to restaurants etc. I would suggest setting aside one day to drive along the Icefields Parkway in Banff/Jasper National Parks - the views are spectacular and you can stop to look at the various sites (waterfalls, take a snowcoach onto the glacier etc.).

In Calgary, there are lots of things to do as well as outside of Calgary. Depends on your interests.

Thanks a Lot for your reply and very valuable advice. I have now started a new post as canada and western US.

I know it is too much to cover but We just hoped to cover some of the important destinations in west US while viting west Canada. We have been to Las Vegas before and surprisingly both my teenagers, boy and a girl, love the place. They had been to a music concert and some good plays, and have always asked if we could return. Funnily enough evn without gambling for a penny, both my husband and I loved the hotels, architecture and buzz and would like to stop just for 2 nights.

Altjough once we start making the final itinerary and bookings, we may be forced to drop a place or two.

Thanks again
