fairmont hot spring to Jasper - day trip, possible?

my hubby and I are going to spend the 1st week of May in the Sunchaser Vacation resort. Just wonder if a day trip to Jasper is doable and worth it or should we spend a night there? Is camping easy to book or we must reserve in advance? Any suggestion would be much appreciate.

You should spend the night in Jasper. That's because the 5 1/2 hour drive from Fairmont to Jasper takes you on the Hwy 93N, also called the Icefields Parkway - one of Canada's most scenic roads. By staying overnight in Jasper, you can take your time and enjoy all the stops along the way. Also, if the weather turns poor (clouds, rain) so that you can't enjoy the scenery on the northbound trip, you have a second chance to see the sights on the return trip the next day.

Make sure to top up your fuel in Lake Louise and bring a picnic lunch and snacks with you; there is only one, very expensive, gas station between Lake Louise and Jasper, and the food along the Icefields Parkway tends to be expensive, not too thrilling, and often involves a long wait as the few (4) restaurants along the way can be very busy.

It's not a day trip - you are talking about a 5+ hour trip one-way if the roads are good. And given the season we've had so far (20+ cm of fresh snow in Lake Louise over the weekend), it's quite possible that there will still be wintry weather along the passes & Icefields Parkway. There certainly will be plenty of snow on the ground along the way

Camping is possible, but you'd have to prepared for the chance of snow (i.e. 4 season tent) and temps dipping below freezing. So you'd need warm sleeping bags and clothes. The only campsite that will be open is Whistlers and that early you wouldn't need a reservation. If you want to stay a night in Jasper, you are probably best finding an inexpensive private home accommodation - in early May, you should be able to get good off season rates.

I this road always open this time of year and with all the snow you're talking about, can you make any worth wile stops along the way?

The Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93N between Lake Louise and Jasper) is open year-round. However, like any mountain road, it can be closed due to heavy snowfall. The chances of that happening in May are slim, but it has happened before, so it is not impossible. So check the weather forecast and road report before you leave your hotel for this drive.

The roadside pullouts could still be blocked with snow; it depends on the recent weather.

*The roadside pullouts could still be blocked with snow from the winter, depending on how much thawing has occurred.

Thanks so much for the helpful advices to help us prepared for the wintery condition. We will definitely stay overnight for our trip to Jasper and get gas at Lake Louise.
