Christmas in Banff/lake Louise

I am thinking of arranging family ski trip for Dec (17th probably for 10 days) with 3 teens (18,16 and 14). Will the 18 year old be able to drink alcohol in the bars? Also any suggestions for suitable accommodation that would possibly have other young persons around and suggestions for Christmas day...hotels/ restaurants??

Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Jo

Yes, Alberta's legal drinking age is 18. However, drinking outside of licensed establishments is more tightly restricted than in other places. You can't have open alcohol on the streets, you can't take your half-finished drink to your hotel room from the hotel bar. Also, alcoholic beverages may be much more expensive than you're used to.

Thats ok...he just wants the odd beer after skiing and glass of wine at dinner...not into drinking in the street etc!! Have been to Whistler when they would not let me carry my 2 year old daughter across the bar to the loo!!!!

Liquor licensing is a very complex thing (and is regulated by each province, so the rules change with each provincial border). Some licensed premises allow minors (under 18's in Alberta, under 19's in BC) to be present, but not served; some licenses expressly stipulate that minors are absolutely not allowed... which must have been the case with your 2 y/o. No business can afford to lose their liquor license so they have to enforce the rules that go along with the particular type of license they have.

Just to add to the confusion, some premises' licenses apparently vary depending on the time of day. A few years back, I recall visiting a pub in Banff where it was okay to have a minor for a late lunch, but the staff cautioned us that we had to be out by 5 pm (?) because they weren't allowed to have minors after that time. This was also posted on the front door, but we had missed seeing it because it was propped open.

Since no one has suggested any accomodationsto you yet. I'm going to chime in and recommend the Fox Inn & Suites to you, its on the main street in Banff.

It's a nice place, and it has a neat little hot pool on the lower parking level underneath the hotel. The loft rooms are great, they have a fireplace, balcony, king-sized bed in the loft, 2 bathrooms, a separate bedroom with a queen sized bed and another small single bed, and also a hide-a-bed in the sofa in the living room area. Your teens might like this set up as everyone will have lots of room.

There are also a variety of accommodations throughout Banff and Lake Louise that are family friendly and include amenities and services that would appeal to the different ages of your children.

Feel free to consider any of the following properties in addition to the Fox Hotel & Suites:

- Douglas Fir Resort

- Hidden Ridge Resort

- Banff Rocky Mountain Resort

- Baker Creek Mountain Resort

All of these accommodations and more are listed on our website as well, banfflakelouise.com
