Biking with Children on the Legacy Trail

Our family is planning a trip to Banff this summer. We would like to bike some of the Legacy trail, but am thinking that Banff to Canmore and back is too much for our 9-year-old. Does anyone have experience with this trail? I don't want to just go one way because we have no cheap way to get ourselves and all the bikes back. Is there a portion of the trail that anyone would recommend? We are going to need to rent bikes, so we must be able to start from a bike rental place and return there easily.

The Banff Legacy trail is a must for families. You don't have to go all the way to Canmore - there are 2 family friendly stops that I would highly recommend. The first is the Cascade Ponds Picnic area (it's a short "bonus" trip) and then continue to the Valleyview Picnic area. It's the perfect spot to turn around. The benefit of doing this as an "out and back" is you get to decide when you want to turn around. But I would highly recommend the Valleyview Lookout as your turn-around.

Rent a bike in Downtown Banff (kids bikes on Bear Street at Backtrax or Soul Bike). You do have to ride on our main street for a few blocks, but if your nervous about traffic take the sidewalk until you hit the Legacy Trail. Pick up a map at the Information Centre.

Valleyview is a great suggestion, if your 9 yr old is used to biking. Take your time, take a picnic lunch and enjoy your stop there.

The Legacy Trail is a lot of fun for families!

Just a reminder that riding on the sidewalk is OK for your kids under 14, not for you. And, in the more pedestrian-busy downtown area, if you want the kids to be on the sidewalk, they should walk their bikes.

Ask at the bike rental places for good routes that parallel Banff Avenue -- taking the quieter streets will be more pleasant for the family, then you can switch onto Banff Avenue just before the Legacy Trail start point.
