Where to fly into for Banff/Lake Louise/Jasper?

My husband and I won free airline tickets, which sounds great, but, VERY limited availablity and can't book more than 90 days out. We are looking at going to Banff/Lake Louise/Jasper and spending about a week there sometime in June (aiming for late in the month, if we can) or early July. However, it doesn't look like we can find anything available into Calgary for flights for June right now.

If we can manage to find a flight into Edmonton or Vancouver instead, any pluses/minuses of either of those options? Or are we best to just use our free tickets to somewhere else this year and plan on doing this trip another time when we aren't confined by blackout dates?

Edmonton is a closer drive to Jasper (around 4 hours) than Banff is from Vancouver.

If you went in to Edmonton you could then first go to Jasper then down to Lake Louise / Banff.

Check in to see if they will let you fly out of a different city.... maybe they will have room to fly out of Calgary.

On the flip side of the coin, the drive from Vancouver to Banff or Jasper is quite scenic, while the drive from Edmonton to Jasper is pretty boring (IMHO). But it does take at least 9 hours of driving (not including breaks for gas & food) to get from Vancouver to Lake Louise.

By far the preferrence for Banff and LL is to fly into Calgary.

Use Edmonton to access Jasper.

While Vancouver to the Banff area is a great drive in terms of scenery, it's not the best idea if you only have a week.

Calgary would be best to fly into, since the drive from Edmonton to Jasper is pretty boring, but given the time you have available, it's a much better option than flying into Vancouver.
