How much Liquor can you bring into Mexico with you?

We are flying from Seattle to Puerto Vallarta (staying in Nuevo Vallarta) and wondering how much liquor you are allowed to bring with you. I understand that the wine selection is limited, so wanted to bring some with us. Also does anyone know where the new Costco opening early March 08 is going to be? How does the new Mega store in Bucerias compare to a Costco??

Thanks

We bought down 8 bottles of wine between my husband and myself. I think the limit on wine is 3 litres thus four bottles.

What You Can Bring into Mexico (Copied directly from the www.Frommers.com website)

When you enter Mexico, Customs officials will be tolerant as long as you have no illegal drugs or firearms. You're allowed to bring in two cartons of cigarettes or 50 cigars, plus 1 kilogram (2.2 lb.) of smoking tobacco; two 1-liter bottles of wine or hard liquor, and 12 rolls of film. A laptop computer, camera equipment, and sports equipment that could feasibly be used during your stay are also allowed. The underlying guideline is: Don't bring anything that looks as if it's meant to be resold in Mexico.

I pulled this off the Mexican government site so it must be right.

Adults ages 18 and older may bring up to 20 cigarette cartons, 25 cigars, 200 grams of tobacco

Adults ages 18 and older may bring up to 3 liters of wine, beer or liquor

Mexican regulations limit the value of goods (above and beyond the personal possessions listed above) brought into Mexico by U.S. citizens. Visitors arriving by air or sea can bring into Mexico goods valued up to $300 ( U.S.) per person. Visitors arriving by land can bring into Mexico goods valued up to $50 ( U.S.) per person. Amounts exceeding the duty-free limit are subject to a 32.8 percent tax.

Thanks so much for both of your replys - do you know where the best place to find a good selection of wine at decent prices? Have either of you been to the new Mega store in Bucerias?

Last time we were there was last Nov Mega was still in building stages. Walmart or Sam's club might be your best bet. If you are in PV the La Playa liquor store on Olas Atlas has a small selection with some ok spanish, Chileans at a fair price.

Hopefully Costco will be open when you get there and that would be your best bet besides the new Mega store :) I think it is located in Flavial )wrng spllng sorry)

We bought our own into Mexico because we like our BC, California and Aussie whites along with a few reds that we knew the stores wouldn't have.

We did buy a decant Chilean red at the grocery store at Paradise Village mall but the mark up was pretty high.

When we were in NV in August, we went directly to the Walmart - it was HUGE!! They had a fairly good selection of wine and other alcohols, but we only bought what we were bringing home with us - didn't want to spend money to drink outside of our resort since alcohol was included in the price of our stay. However, another couple there did purchase wine from Walmart for drinking at the resort and the staff were kind enough to provide them with a couple of wine glasses... but the only way they could drink their store-bought wine in the a la cartes was by pouring themselves a glass in their room and brining it like that to the a la carte - they did not permit them to bring in the bottle, only wine by the glass.

Hope that helps.

If you are staying in Nuevo, the Mega store is closest and has as good a wine selection as Walmart.

Does anyone know how much beer can be bought in? My husband only likes Miller Lite and would like to bring some with him. Also is any American beer sold? Thanks
