Taxi Cost to Xel-Ha from Catalonia Riviera May

Can anybody tell me about what to expect to pay round-trip to Xel-Ha via taxi from the Catalonia Riviera Maya in Puerto Adventuras? We definitely want to go, but don't want to spend half of our time on a tour bus and then be held to their time schedule. We'll be going with our family of 4. Thanks!

I cannot remember the exact cost - but we took that option and it not only saved us a lot - it also was terrific to get into Xel-Ha before the tour buses so you can pick a good spot for the day as your base to leave your stuff, etc.

The one time we did buy the "tour" from the hotel travel rep we did spend bloody forever stopping at other hotels to pick people up and then all the way back again at the end of the day. What a really big waste of time and it actually costs more to do it that way if you have (4) people.

Do note - outside the Catalonia is a price list for taxis for any destination you want to travel to - so you know exactly what to pay in advance. I highly recommend you verify this / confirm with your taxi driver before you take off because they will try to charge you more upon arrival. We also found it interesting getting the taxi returns from Xel-Ha and Akumal. Some of the drivers wanted to charge more for the return trip and we had to negotiate the rate before we could get a ride back!!

Have fun - Xel-Ha is the best fun ever!!

Thanks so much JulesTravel! We definitely don't want to do the tour to Xel-Ha--the prices seem very inflated. it is good to know they have the cab fares posted at the resort--that will be very helpful.

LL - Atlanta ... Do be cautious with the taxis - for instance - when coming back to Catalonia from both Playa and Akumal (also another great side trip to Yal Ku Lagoon) the drivers declared a fare higher than it should have been. In one instance, the bellperson at Catalonia stepped in for us and told the driver NO - "this is what the fare should be" ...

From the Catalonia though - they have a shuttle bus that goes into Playa Del Carmen 2x per day. You need to sign up / reserve a day or so in advance with the concierge - but its a really fun thing to do ... lots of shopping and lovely little cafes in Playa. There's one right on the beach (not on the main street near the park - that ones a "rip off" ... but one-two blocks in from the main street) the tables/chairs are right there in the sand and the food is not only a bargain but delicious and the view of the sea right at your feet is not to be missed!

You are full of great info, JulesTravel!!! My huband and I have been to Cozumel twice before, but that was a REALLY long time ago. We took the ferry over to Playa Del Carmen when PDC was barely a town. From the pictures I"ve seen, things have changed tremendously over the last 16 years or so--I don't think we'll be able to recognize anything from that long ago! Even 16 years ago, though, there were some dishonest cab drivers, charging twice what the fare should be. Some things never change...

Did you do the ATV Jungle Tour? My boys (ages 12 & 15) are really looking foward to that. If they enjoy snorkeling at Xel-Ha we might go to Yal Ku Lagoon also. Did they have life vests available at Yal Ku?

We have not done the ATV tour but those that have said it was GREAT so I'm sure your boys would love that. We did go to a very remote Cenote area in the jungle that was really awesome - but bring lots of VERY strong bug spray with lots of deet. You will truly be shocked at the mosquitos in the jungle - they will try to carry you off into the clouds!! :)

To get to Yal Ku Lagoon you can hire a taxi from the Catalonia - I think it was only about $10. Its VERY remote compared to Xel Ha and when we were there - we were virtually alone other than a few other "adventurers" like us. It was simply fantastic! There a little desk at the gate - they now charge about $6 to go in and you can rent a life vest for about $5. You definately need bug spray there and bio-degradable sunscreen also. I cannot say enough about how awesome it was there because you have the place to yourselves and the parrot fish and nemos are amazing and at your beckon call! They also have a little shower to rinse off and lockers at the gate. Then - while you are down there at Akumal - there's the BEST little beach bar in the world to grab some snacks and drinks/lunch called La Buena Vida 1/2 way between the Lagoon and the town of Akumal (you can walk down there and then walk to town to get the taxi back to Catalonia). This cafe on the beach - again so remote/local - it's so much more fun than the commercialism like Xel Ha - although we LOVE that place too! Its just more fun to explore on your own! Here's a link to Akumal info ...

Feel free to ask anything else - we travel down there 1-2x per year and love the area. Always trying new adventures when there!!

Kelly ... Oh my ... yes - 2 weeks from today - in fact - about this time we'll be arriving to Catalonia! I can hardly stand the excitement!

I think I am going to book a tour van, instead of car rental, to take our group out on a self-guided excursion. With 13 in our group, it will be very cost effective and lots more fun! Yippee!!

It looks like we are going to miss you both, kelstony and Jules. We will be leaving 3 weeks from tommorrow (June 2). Can't Wait!!!!! We had a trip planned last July to the Cat, but Hurricane Emily hit just 3 days before we were supposed to go. We were lucky not to be down there when it hit, but we've been waiting for this trip for over a year!!! Thanks for all of the terrific info Jules, and ya'll both have a wonderful trip!

LL-Atlanta ... Actually - I'll still be there! We were lucky enough to have 10 days so we depart on 6/3 Saturday. So - perhaps our paths will cross! And hopefully we will be fat, tan and relaxed as lizards by then!

Kelly - Truthfully - there is so much to do at Catalonia - not to mention how nice it is to just sit in the pool and have ice cold cocktails - you just may not want to leave the resort much! For the 10 days we are there - we will pick probably only two events - such as our van tour and then Playa one day - and that's it - I have made the mistake of over-planning ourselves before and then we end up feeling like we need a vacation from our vacation!!

Oh my!! : ) How much fun will we all have!
