Grocery and the Sam's Club, is it like in the Midwest?

From Iowa, going to a non-inclusive in Feb 2014. We will want some groceries obviously; is the Sam's Club like in the US? In other words, can you buy beer & liquor there? Where else can you advise for grocery shopping?

Yes you can buy beer & liquor at Sams, at Bodega, and at Comercial Mexicana (my 1 stop grocery store, although I go to Bodega & Sams for certain things). You can buy beer & liquor almost at any little tienda as well. Sams does not have fresh produce, but the other 2 certainly do, and then there is the mercado for produce, fish, chicken, etc.

You can get most anything in Zihua that you can get in Iowa except a "Big Mac", and that's a good thing!

Ditto Linda....

Love the Commercial Mexicana! Stock up on your way in...it's got it all! Love their wine selection.

Welcome to Zihuatanejo from a Old Iowa (Cedar Falls) guy.

Best places for fruits & vegetables is in/around the Mercado in El Central on Benito Juarez. Fresher & far cheaper than the box stores. In fact you will find the chains pricing on most items above what you find at home.

If you want fresh fish go to the waterfront early AM buying from the local fisherman. They come in directly in front of The Marina Cafe/Cafecita cafes next to the basketball court.

thanks All!! We will be staying down towards Barra de Potosi; about 1/2 way between there and the air port. We planned that so we could be away from the "at home" convenience of fast-food, and really enjoy Zih. With that in mind, flying in on a Friday early afternoon, what will be most convenient for a fast stop?

What about the duty-free at the airport?? This is our first time to Zih, so not familiar with much...so many questions!

Are you renting a car? You must if you are half way between the airport and La Barra (aKA the middle of nowhere) To shop you will need to go back the other way to Zihuatanejo and your best bet is Commercial Mexicana both in terms of everything available and easiest to get there and back.

People seem to get confused about "duty free" at the airport. Only DEPARTING passengers (leaving the country) can purchase there. In truth the prices are not that good anyhow.

Also, the duty free is poor. Buy your booze at the above mentioned stores. Smuggled Tequila tastes better.
