Car Rental

Looking to rent a car while in Ixtapa, what tips are recommended? Is it best to rent at the airport or in the hotel zone? buying additional rental insurance? Is it safe to drive a car? Is it better if a local rents a car for us?, we have relatives in the area...

First tip, unless you are planning some day trips 50 miles or beyond, you not only don't want a car rental, you won't need one. Parking is not convenient in Zihua and taxi are very cheap. Buses are even cheaper and add to the adventure of getting around. Plus there are many taxi drivers that you can hire for a partial day and they are reasonable and reliable. Second tip, if you should rent, you will have to buy Mexican auto insurance unless you have very deap pockets and enjoy a night or 2 in a Mexican jail if you need to pay up right now but can't afford to.

We've done it in the past when we have strayed from Ixtapa/Zihua for a week trip inland and back. Bought the insurance and didn't need it. Good luck!

In general , I agree with Ted . If after a few days you still wanted to rent a car with ALL the necessary insurances to be covered as you are at home then you could do so in downtown Zih or Ixtapa for a similar price as the airport . A local rapid spanish speaker may get you a better deal as with all things but less likely in this fixed cost transaction . Full insurance should cost more than the quoted daily price of the car . We almost always rent a car in other Mexican destinations by choice but really don't miss one in Zihua with the compact nature of the place and the plentiful cheap cabs and buses . Enjoy your trip .

Tip # 3, should you decide to rent a car, don't drive after dark. In many rural areas, cattle free range and like to sleep in the middle of the "warm" roads. Should you hit a cow, you will be responsible to the owner for the value of that animal. Several years ago we meet a Canadian couple while we were in Cabofornia who hit and killed a cow. They took the time to report it and find the owner. Right or wrong, in hindsight they wish they had just left the scene because they not only had a huge deductible to pay on a damaged rental car, they had to also pay for a dead cow that was sleeping in the middle of the road.

If you want names of reliable, English-speaking taxi drivers to hire for a day, let us know. There are several good ones and you can book them in advance.

How much additional insurance is needed to rent a car in mexico? carrentals.com has the option to purchase online for $11.99 per day instead of $30 at the counter, is this suffient coverage in mexico?

Collision Damage Coverage is a smart investment that we encourage all our customers to include. It provides important coverage for many of the things you just never expect in your rental car. It's a great choice for our customers because it offers:

$35,000 in Collision Damage Coverage, $0 Deductible

Primary coverage

Coverage for collision and/or damage due to collision, theft, vandalism, fire, or hail

A great deal at $11.99* per day. It's the smart choice for travelers who want premium coverage but don't want to pay $14 - $30 at the counter

Third Party Liability is mandatory in order to rent and drive a car in Mexico. Your credit card WILL NOT provide this coverage. Your personal auto insurance policy back home in the U.S. won't cover it.
