Travel to Puebla in November! Cooking Lessons + Safety?

I plan to travel to Puebla in November, over thanksgiving and was looking for information on cooking schools, there was one mentioned in the New York Times a while back but I dont have the article anymore.

My original trip was to Oxaca for the food of the gods festival in October but the place seems to have a lot of trouble these days. The New York times article on this was very poignant on the issue! Its really a shame about the violence, hope the contentous issue is resolved to the satisfaction of all soon, id hate a beautiful place like that to go to pieces!

This brings me to my other question, should I fear for my safety in a city like Peubla and Veracruz that I plan to visit after peubla. I know about the petty crime stuff to be careful of like pickpockets etc and how to avoid that, but should I be concerned about violent crime? and other violence in general related to the contested election.

Thanks for any advice, any other information you think that would be useful about planning the trip is also welcome.

Mexican Home Cooking School in Tlaxcala (http://mexicanhomecooking.com/) receives very high marks from people who've attended, from what I hear (and have read). Tlaxcala is a hop, skip and jump from Puebla and presents a good alternative to Oaxaca.

Tlaxcala is one of the least-known states and it has a teriffic arts/crafts and historical scene (including nearby archeological zones - in the small state itself).

I've uploaded some photos of Tlaxcala to an online album, and you can visit it to have a look for yourself:

As for safety in Puebla, and going to/from Puebla: it's not considered an unsafe route or particularly crime-ridden city - certainly not in the same league in those matters as Mexico City or Oaxaca (at the moment).

Veracruz is an excellent destination, also - one often overlooked by Americans and Canadians; I like the port city. The city's not known to have a crime problem, nor are the highways to/from there considered unsafe.

Best of luck with the planning!

Dear Ram,

This is not the right moment to visit Oaxaca, but I'm originally from Veracruz and I live in Puebla; thanks God both are very safe places to visit right now.

Puebla is a beautiful city, named "World Heritage" by UNESCO, with very nice downtown hotels in antique monasteries and convents, like:

There is a goog cooking school in Tlaxcala, not too far from Puebla, popular with Americans:

Have a good trip!!
