lower-end hotels Puebla

We're planning a trip to Puebla and environs mid-November. Thanks for all the good information here!

Having seen several recommendations for the Imperial on this forum, I'm leaning toward reserving there (their website quotes $40 USD a night). However, we always tend to stay in modest hotels/ hostels, and are on a budget ...saving even $10 or $15 over that might make a difference.

For central hotels a grade down from the Imperial, guidebooks recommend

--the Hotel Teresita, 3 Poniente 309

--the Hotel Victoria, 3 Poniente 306

-- the Hotel Santander 5 Poniente 111.

Any comments on these? Or are the breakfast, filtered water, and other amenities at the Imperial worth the difference?

Hotel Imperial has an unadvertised discount -- if you are carrying a guidebook that recommends Hotel Imperial and you show it at check-in, you will get a discount. So, check out a guidebook from the library, and make sure that the guidebook explicitly says that guidebook users will get a discount.

Also, you have to mention that you're using the discount when you make your reservation.

Looking at my log, with discount, I spent $28/night for a single room there. The price might have gone up since then.

The amenities at Hotel Imperial aren't that great, but I liked staying there because the staff are friendly and helpful.

As I posted in an earlier thread, I stayed at the Hotel Imperial for 10 days last December, got the guidebook-carrying discount by asking for it, and had no problems there: the beds were firm and not lumpy, there was always hot water (though at least one other person did find a shortage), and the staff was uniformly friendly and helpful. Two things I really appreciated: the elevator (wonderful not to have to climb any stairs after a day of walking everywhere) and the purified water system. I drank their tap water the whole time and had no intestinal problems at all, then or afterwards, except for a brief bout of awfulness right after eating in a guidebook-recommended restaurant that is apparently notorious for afflicting some people's insides. And

no, it wasn't that my stomach was unaccustomed to Mexican food and flavors - I live in New Mexico ahnd my insides are quite well-trained.

I appreciate the continued good comments on the Imperial. Thanks.

However.... still interested to hear if anybody has any experience of any of the three hotels I asked about?

Hotel Victoria is sketchy and dirty. It would be better to stay at Hotel Teresita because the prices are the same. If you book a double room $31 US, it looks pretty much like a standard hotel room in the US. Pay the extra $2 to get a room with a window to the street, it has great views and it has double paned windows so you don´t hear any street noise. Hotel Santander, I am not sure about. Also, check out Hotel San Miguel 3 Poniente y 9 Sur. it´s about the same quality as Hotel Teresita but it has an elevator, restaraunt, and accepts credit cards. Hope this helps! Have fun in Puebla!

Thank you very much! That is really helpful.

Just FYI to everyone, I contacted the Imperial, and for fall 2007 the rate with discount is about $33US ....and they gave me a specific list of guides that they would accept for the discount.

Just a quick note. A friend and I just returned from Puebla. The first few nights were at the Hotel De Talavera, because we need a place to park. The room had 2 double beds, tv, bottled water, good bathroom. The charge was 380 pesos per day, including secure parking next door.

The last days, we didn't need the parking garage, so we moved to the Victoria hotel. Large, clean romm on the third floor. Two double beds, TV and bathroom, small balcony. 190 pesos per night.

Bothe these hotels were about 1 1/2 blocks from the zocala,or main square.

I would choose either of these hotels in a minute, when I return to Puebla.
