Just wanted to check on weather and butterflies in January around Morelia. We hope to be there in mid January on our way to Oaxaca.
Yes, January is an excellent time to visit the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. Due to the high altitude it can get cold though: we experienced a light snow-fall on our way down from the mountain. You need to be there mid morning for the sun to warm the butterflies up and encourage them to flutter down from the trees.

Thank you for the info and website. Our options are to go on either during the second week of January or at the end of our trip, the second week of March. Is the March date too late? At that point we would be coming from Oaxaca. In January we would go to Mexico City on our way down and then over to Morelia.
The Sanctuary closes sometime in March so it's definitely too late. The butterflies start to leave at the end of Feb, I believe.
There are tours from Morelia, and also from here (San Miguel) if you don't want to drive yourself. The last sections are on horseback then on foot anyway.
