Safety and driving to Los Barrilles from San Jose

HI, my husband and 2 girls are leaving for San Jose next week. We were told yesterday that we need to be prepared to pay a lot of bribes to drive the highway and that we needed to have a hdden wallet with our cash in it and then a second wallet for when we are stopped and need to pay bribes. I haven't read anything of the sort like that on these forums, but this person who told us this said the safety has drastically changed in the last 3 months. We fly into San Jose and then we are renting a car (I'm going with Mex Rent a Car, I'll be sure to leave review) and driving to Los Barilles for 5 days, then driving back to San Jose for 2 days. Can anyone speak directly to the need for a second wallet and the bribes that we may encounter on the highyway?

thanks!

The thing to be concerned about is if you are driving at night. Animals can sometimes come out onto the road to sleep.

As for paying a traffic ticket, locals often recommend that you not pay it on the spot. Instead, ask the police officer for the ticket or to escort you to the police station so you can pay it there. Here's posting from someone recently who got stopped. They paid far too much for the infraction they were accused of.

We drove that road a few times in Nov 2017 and had no problems. I did see an occasional police car, but did not see anyone pulled over by the police.

I did have a second wallet with a small amount of cash and some expired credit cards but never needed it.

We were in many places and did not see much to worry about, but after our visits, La Paz and Cerritos had some problems.

Lol I'm thinking someone is pulling your leg. Drive within the law in the town's and you'll be fine. Keep a lookout for stop signs and bumps, mostly in towns, even the very small ones has bumps. Otherwise no one is going to jump out and demand money to continue. Drove the Baja top to bottom only issue was pot holes. The total 12 times stopped at Military check points was professional and friendly. Nice people. Don't drive at night due to roads (curves dips) and cows.

Haha! Maybe. I just needed to be reassured. Thank you! We will obey all road signs.

We just returned from a week in Los Barriles (myself, my husband and my 16 year old son). We drove out after dark and had no problems at all. Just drive slow as others have said. We also drove from Los Barriles to Punta Pescadoro again with no problems. Everybody was incredibly kind.
