I-25 south to Hatch New Mexico. Take shortcut on Hwy 26 to Deming. I-10 to Tucson. I-19 to Nogales. Cross at the West Mariposa Rd port of entry. Hwy 15 in Mexico south to Hermosillo and continue south almost to Guaymas. Then west to San Carlos. It is a total of about 18 hours driving time.

When you reach Nogales, 15 miles south of the border at "Kilometer 21 Checkpoint," you will stop and get your tourist permit. No vehicle permit is required for travel in Sonora. San Carlos is about 5 hours from the border. The highway is a 4-lane highway all the way to the turnoff to San Carlos.

Be sure you have Mexican insurance on your vehicle including coverage for collision, theft and vandalism. There is no threat of theft or vandalism but it is wise to have full coverage and not just the required 3rd party Mexican liability insurance. Mexican insurance can be purchased online or in Tucson or Nogales. AAA also offers Mexican insurance. Your US auto insurance is not valid in Mexico. Passports are required for entry to Mexico and return to the US.

Thanks so much.

Would it make sense to fly to an airport closer to San Carlos and then rent a car? Airfare at this point, to Guayamas, is more than $700 RT.

The only other airport close is Hermosillo, and it costs as much to fly there. You could consider flying to Tucson and renting a car here to drive down. That's about a 6 hour drive. All the major companies will rent cars to go to Mexico with the required insurance. They do not permit their cars to go into Mexico unless specifically rented for that purpose.
