Is San Miguel safe these days?

We are thinking of spending a week there this coming May. We've been there twice before and never worried, but we just heard about the kidnapping in 2007. What is it like there now?

Your sarcasm is unhelpful and inappropriate on tripadvisor

With due respect, your question did come over as somewhat daft.

Also, please take the trouble to use the search function. This question has been done to death on this and other forums. There have been at least 4 threads on safety this year in San Miguel. And this one from last Oct went into great detail on the so-called kidnapping:

I repeat: put-downs (daft) to a new user is not a helpful response, either. Why don't you try to do a bit of teaching? (I am an educator, and it is never appropriate to criticize students for not understanding something. I work with the incorrect answer.) If you don't like my question, please either simply make a suggestion about how to find the answer or don't write. I don't feel like writing to tripadvisor if my questions are going to be criticized by people like you, and I doubt others would either. I doubt that that is the effect the sponsors of Tripadvisor want.

FYI, I did do a search of posts on this subject, and I didn't find anything after 2008 or so. My question was "these days", not 2008.

If you have visited San Miguel before then I am sure you will notice no difference in levels of safety this time around. The violent kidnapping that occurred years ago was of a resident (not tourist) and was personal (not just for money) - it should not be of any concern whatsoever to a visitor.

Absolutely. I live in Jacksonville, Fl and own a home in San Miguel and I feel safer in San Miguel than in Jacksonville. There are occasional home invasions and the most prevalent crime is spousal abuse. As in any city, there are areas you should avoid after dark. Go and have a fabulous time.

January 2011 for two weeks. Completely safe, both in the city and the countryside. Rode the bus to Altotonico and made two birding trips out of town.

I don't have any financial 'interest' in San Miguel, and can only offer you insight to my experience there and what I've read. When you hear sarcastic responses, it is because they know the truth.

My first visit there was eight years ago. I fell in love with it. I then went every year for the next five years. My last visit I noticed a lot more police on the streets, steeper prices, and I felt extremely cautious and nervous. There were fewer places to eat and more of a depressive/desperate state of those still in business. It wasn't the place I visited the first time, nor the several times after. My last visit three years ago, was my last. I do miss what I did experience. However, I know enough to know it'll be better to wait this one out before I return. There is a lot of wonderful things there, it's just getting harder and harder to find them.
