My wife and I attended a week of classes in February, 2016. We love Mexico and love Tulum. Meztli Language School is above all totally welcoming to new students of all levels. The teachers are very friendly and interesting as were the other students . Our host family was outstanding and we totally enjoyed the experience. We will definitely return next year.

So looking forward to our return for more Spanish classes in July. We've rented a house next to the school and can't wait!
We had another amazing learning vacation at Meztli and Sara Luna continues to out do herself with excellent Spanish teachers and a fun program. The new location is great, closer to the main street in Tulum so we could walk or take our bikes and easily get everywhere we wanted to go in town. BTW we priced bikes and Meztli had the best rental rates, Very happy with our progress and we are now ready for some extensive travels throughout Latin America.
I went to Tulum last May to deepen my study of Spanish and accompany that study with experiencing the breathtaking beauty of Quintana Roo as my holiday. Although I could afford to stay in an Air BnB I chose to stay with one of the host families that are connected through the school. My host family soon felt like members of my own family and were so helpful to me in guiding me to secret beautiful local spots and cenotes as well as helping me with my Spanish homework and speaking in general. I truly felt invited into their home and treated like one of their family members! Meztli Spanish School is a true gem of Tulum and the teachers are incredible! Not only are they warm, patient, generous, and passionate about teaching Spanish, they hold so much knowledge about Mayan and Mexican history and use the sharing of that information as a platform to dive in to enriching one's interfacing with Spanish. I improved my Spanish so rapidly and immensely in the short three weeks I was there and am already planning a trip back to learn more! Meztli's school and the programs it offers are a fantastic way to more fully experience the history, culture, and beauty of this part of Mexico!
I enjoyed my time at Meztli Spanish school. I went there with no Spanish background and I learned a tremendous amount of information. The teachers were extremely patient and very friendly. I also enjoyed staying with my host family. The host family was very welcoming and they took me in as one of their own family members. I will go back.
Another trip to Meztli in the workings, for me only this time. I'm planning for March 27, 2017 and if others who are reading this are going at that time, it would be fun to chat in advance.
My comments related to Meztli are based on my experience comparing it to four other Language Schools in Mexico. In summary, I have had better experiences at the 4 other schools.
Common to all schools -- Class sizes are most typically 4 - 5 students. All offer social activities - excursions, cooking classes and Latin dance lessons (some charge extra). All can organize stays with host families. International House has a student residence. Instructors -- there is not a major difference in the instructors....they all make an effort. 2 larger schools are managed out of Europe - Don Quijote and International House.
Difference -- So whats the difference then? Differences are in management, maximum number of students allowed, facilities (minimal to sophisticated), location, cost, and what is included in the price - registration fee, text books, number of course hours per week, social activities.
1. Metzli - Tulum Mex - Group and private lessons. No text books - limited periodic photocopied material. WiFi. Class rooms outdoors under huts. Limited white boards - smaller, handheld. Maximum students 5. New group of students almost any day. Classes: 15 Hours (2 hrs grammar, 1 hr conversation). Social activities - most are free. One bathroom for all staff and students. One-time $ 55 US registration fee. Pay weekly in cash or via PayPal. Differentiation - (a) minimal facilities, (b) instructors - my experience -- one talked too much, another long time instructor mocked a student, (d) location is a distant edge of town, (e) only school that I have attended that offers classes for children, and, (f) yoga in the morning before class.
2. Language School Chichén Itzá - Playa del Carmen. Group and private lessons. Text book included. WiFi. Air conditioned class rooms. Large white boards. Classes: 15 hours. Small classes. Cost - lower than others, great value! Family run business. You are part of their family. Central location. Highly recommended.
3. Puebla Institute of Spanish - Puebla, Mex - Group and private lessons. Tuition includes; (a) text book, (b) resource materials, (c) paid lunch at a restaurant --3 course meal, (d) 2 hours with university student each afternoon touring around tourist area to practice conversation, and, (e) use of computer lab. WiFi. Air conditioned class rooms. Large whiteboards. Instruction: 30 hours. Comprehensive - all inclusive price includes more than others. Central location. Recommended.
4. Don Quijote - Playa del Carmen. Group and private lessons. Text books extra. WiFi. Class rooms outdoors under huts. Large white boards. New group of students every Monday. Maximum number of students 8. Classes: 20 hours. Social activities - extra for cooking classes and Latin dance lessons. Large school. Many students from European countries. Central location.
