I am not sure. Maybe they were after copper. That often happens in Cozumel. They will steal anything to get copper.

Ohhh...well, that makes sense. People steal copper off a/c units of individual homes around here. In bad neighborhoods, a/c units are in cages.

There was a recent incident in Texas somewhere that the thieves had cut the main power feed from the street to steal the copper wire from a CHURCH which was still live! A huge explosion followed as they had used a giant boltcutter on the live wire and injuries had to of occurred.

Here in NM, copper theft is EVERYWHERE and several years ago, two thieves tried to strip the 1" grounding cable off miles and miles of the track for our commuter train that runs between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. It caused over $60,000 in damage and delayed the opening of the route.

Even our scrap yards have been asked to try and verify the source of commodities being brought in for cash.

The poorer the place, the more desperate folks between. The bigger the disparity between the rich and poor is allowed to grow, the more folks will do whatever it takes to put food in their mouths.

We have a big problem with scrappers in Detroit (in parts of the city, not the metro area). It is not uncommon for people to buy a vacant home in the city and find it scrapped when they try to move in.

People have even tried to steal copper wiring from power lines.

We have that same problem here in Arizona with thieves targeting new-home subdivisions and stripping all the copper wire in the middle of the night from homes under construction.

From the article, it appears the thieves didnt even complete their mission. They

seem to believe they may have been injured. Logical, since the article says they were dealing with 11,000 volts.

As common as security guards are everywhere hear, I am surprised they had no apparent security for something so vital.

In my city a bunch of street lights don't work because people have stolen the copper. As soon as the wiring is replacef, it is stolen again.
