snorkeling and car rental in Tulum

we are looking for a great and reasonably priced situation on beach (of course!) where we could snorkel from our beach and see wonderful reef fish.

Also, is is necessary to rent a car from cancun or is the bus/taxi route better. We are arriving around 3pm the end of feb beg march.

Also, where can we find a map of where the hotels are located (on internet)

First..there is not much snorkling in Tulum off the beach. Punta Piedra dive shop will take you out to the reef by boat. Or you can drive north a little to a small cove called Caleta Tankah. Or to Akumal and snorkle at Yalku.

I think it's better to rent from the airport and drive, but we have kids and any minute longer getting to Tulum is torture for everybody. Ana y Jose rents cars from Tulum.

There are no real maps of Tulum. You have to piece it together from intulum.com and aerial views on locogringo.com. Neither lists everything, but you can get an idea.
