First AI ? Please help us decide

So we had made plans to spend 2 weeks at Aventura Mexicana ,So looking forward to this stay they get some awesome reviews that seem right up our ally as far as what we want out of a hotel stay in Mexico Took us long enough to decide on that one lol Through lots of research and comparing some 20 odd hotels.

Now my wonderful Dh asked me should we not split it up and do AI for one week. He says we are doing so many new things in Mexico so lets do one more,

Witch leads me to our problem we have never ever stayed in a AI resort,

Yeah for more searching lol So I have done some more research I have talked to several of y'all though message about where you stayed and why. Witch has been a ton of help. I don't know what exactly we want out of a AI cause we have never been.

Here is a little background to help yall out

We are going April 5th thru the 12th AI and the 12th thru 19th at Aventura Mexicana.

We are in our mid 30's, married for ever lol, we are adventurous, we like good food, good service, We are not heavy drinkers but like to drink,

We like modern looking hotels ( but we choose out of our element)

We don't want a million kids but well behaved ones are great lol, we don't want girls gone wild but like to party, Like a nice beach and a kool pool.

Hope this helps you to help us

But now I have it down to 4 resorts that seem to be most popular in our price range and I need to know where to stay....

Iberostar Tucán

Riu Playacar

Catalonia Privileged Maroma

Riu Palace Riviera Maya

Thanks again for all your help

RIU Palace would probably cost more than RIU Playacar -- if its not too much more, go with that, although I've never been to Catalonia Privileged Maroma --- that sounds nice too.

We've been to 9 resorts in that part of Mexico, and Iberostar Tucan was the most boring of any. They very much cater to families with small children. And I'm not sure there is even enough there for them. The beach is nice, the jungle is nice -- but once the novelty of that wears off, there isn't much of anything, ever, going on. The bars suck, the food is weird, the same things happen day in, and day out. They did have one fun beach party, which was over way, way, way too quickly. They whipped it out, like it was obligatory, and just as quickly whisked it away.

Have you completely ruled out Secrets Silversands? The reason I ask is because you said you like modern looking resorts and I always think of SSS when people say that.

When we 1st started visiting PDC back in 2005 we did 2 weeks at one resort which after the 1st week became very repetitive and boring, then we did 2-weeks breaking into two AI resorts we learned that for us 1 week in PDC was enough for us you can only walk down 5th so many times before it gets old. Do not get me wrong we love PDC but in moderation, especially since it has become so overcrowded. There are soooo many wonderful places within 1-hour of PDC that truly are worth staying and breaking up the holiday. For example this Nov for our 16 days we will be at the Beach Tulum resort for 5 nights (Tulum has the best beaches in all of Mexico) then only 4 nights in PDC at El faro, then we finish up with 7 nights on Isla Mujeres at the Ixchel Beach Penthouse on Playa Norte. I suggest make the most of the beautiful part of the country and explore and experiment a little, I almost guarantee that once you visit and stay at these other destinations you will likely regret limiting yourself to PDC.

Additionally where we once loved the AI concept now that we have experience the local food in all these locations we would NEVER consider AI again, most are nothing more than a cruise ship on land with marginal food and watered down drinks while competing to get a lounger at 6am.

As for cost we can stay at top rated rooms and properties for example:our deluxe suite at the Beach Tulum with a private rooftop for under $200 per night, 2 bedroom condo on the Beach in PDC for $180 per night, then the Beach/oceanfront private Rooftop Penthouse (#709) at the Ixchel Beach for $199 per night, sure we have food and drinks extra but still very affordable and we get to experience some of the best food and drinks RM has to offer while keeping our vacation fresh and interesting. Every one of our rooms is ocean/beachfront, whereas those rooms at an AI are likely 2-4 times the cost buried in the concrete jungle with no views .

We realize that some folks like their AI's but once you experience what non AI can offer you might be hard pressed to return to AI.

Tulum is the next area that will likely see exponential growth you should consider visiting these places before they become too commercial. For us in 2005 we we 1st visited PDC more than 1/2 the current AI resorts did not exist, now 8 yeas later and 11 visites with 1000's of new rooms in the area it PDC is bulging at the seams, I really miss our earlier years in PDC now we get to experience new places before they explode and get overrun by commodity commercialism. Plus traveling this way then keeps more of your travel dollars in the local economy.

cedarcrest

Thank you for your well thought out post,

We are staying non AI for the reasons you suggested in your post but would also like to experience our first AI resort as we have never stayed at one, We are also going to be visiting on day trips all of the places in your post plus a few more For us the day trips and excursions will be enough of a taste of our other places So that we may decide at a later date to visit again the ones we liked best with that being said we wanted to stay in or around PDC to be central to the places we wanted to visit on our first trip to Mexico

KookinKraze, We've stayed at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya four times in the past three years, the last being this past May. We love it there!! That being said, when we go back to Mexico next May we want to do what you are planning. We want to stay at our Riu five nights and a condo (not sure what one yet) for five nights. RPRM has really good food and a staff that cannot do enough for you. The walk is about 15 to 20 minutes to 5th Ave on the road or about 30 minutes on the beach. The Palace Mexico was just redone last year to ultra modern decor. It would be about 10 minutes further to town, but you have the other Riu's right there that you have access to except dinner. The Riu Yucatan was also just redone. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Good luck and have fun!
