Best Excursions for Family with kids ages 12 & 14?

We are curious to know which excursions would be most enjoyable for our family of four. Kids are are interested in swimming with the dolphins and seeing the ruins, zip lines. Do you recommend purchasing these trips through the tour rep at the hotel or venture out on your own? We want the best deal, but definitely want to choose the SAFEST plan as well. What are some typical costs for these trips? Thanks!

Xplor or selvatica for zipping. Entertainment plus has selvatica package for 84.00/adult and 49.00/child. Not sure about dolphins. Maybe xel ha. You can swim with turtles in wild at akumal or go to crococun zoo. Look at edventure tours for excellent tours of snorkelling and ruins. Have used them in past and future.

For most of these trips we go on our own. Much cheaper, totally safe and you are on your own schedule. Just take a colectivo to Tulum, Xel Ha, Akumal, Xplor, Xcaret, etc. and pay the admission and off you go.

For zipping, Xplor.

For snorkelling, yiou can go to Xel Ha and they will include locker, towel, meals, drinks, tire tube to float down the river and you can eat and drink as much as you want. WE would spend all day there. Great for kids. It is a natural lagoon with tonnes of fish.

If you want to snorkel in the ocean, go to Akumal and rent some snorkel gear and a guide if you want and is really cheap.

To do the ruins, we have done them all, but Tulum is the closest and easiest to get to. Take the colectivo to the ruins and pay the entrance fee and walk around by yourself reading the signs and taking in the sightes. Don't forget to wear your bathing suit and bring your towel, because they have the most amazing meach there. Then take the colectivo 5 more minutes south and get something to eat in the town of Tulum and do some shopping.

We have used the colectivos or the mayab bus on everytrip and take our kids 9, 7 and 1 and have taken them with us since they were 5 months old. The colectivo varies by distance, but is usually around 25 pesos for most places and you can't get lost as the highway runs up and down.

If you were to do Chichen Itza, I would take the tour as it's a 3 hour ride into the jungle to get to, but really impressive.

For Coba you can take the tour or just take a colectivo to Tulum and then a bus to Coba, pay the entrance and hire a bicycle taxi and go around on your own, very easy.
