Iberostar Paraiso Maya - Rape - October 19, 2010

It has been almost 2 months and I have given this property every possible opportunity to do the right thing by simply getting rid of the Iberostar security guard who assaulted me on property grounds. That was my only request so that I could gain closure and move on from this terrible incident without having the weight of putting other women in danger. Unfortunately Iberostar has refused both my requests to provide a lineup as well as the State Judicial Police and the Ministerios Publicos in ridding the property of this rapist. I feel it is now my responsibility to inform other travelers of the lack of protection this property named 'Hotel Chain of the Year 2009' provides its guests.

On October 19, after being safely dropped off by the trolley from the disco, I returned to my room to find my key was deactivated. Therefore, upon returning to the lobby, I asked a security guard to point me in the right direction. It was very late and very dark and I was a bit frightened being out by myself. The security guard agreed to help me and asked me to follow him. Within minutes he grabbed me and forced me into the jungle/bushes and raped me.

As soon as he took his hold off me, I ran through the property screaming and crying I had been raped. Once in an Iberostar lobby, I asked all of security to call the police. They denied my request and would not even write up a report, only got 3 guards to escort me back to my room.

Being on vacation alone, I only wanted to return home as soon as possible. The next morning, I asked for a female member of mgmt to be sent to my room. Upon hearing my story, she immediately contacted the US Consulate. They were both very helpful at the time and the consulate gave me all my options as a US citizen under Mexican Law. It was very overwhelming and entirely against me as the victim, and I decided all I could emotionally do at the time was go home.

During this time and upon my departure, Iberostar gave me every confidence they would do everything they could in apprehending the individual by sending me a photo lineup via email. Unfortunately, once I returned to the states, the rules all changed. Iberostar forwarded all correspondence and information to their insurance company and will no longer communicate with me, nor will they provide the photo lineup to the local officials. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, this monster still remains at large in the form of an Iberostar security guard.

I did return 3 weeks after the crime to make the formal declaration with the local authorities since the Iberostar was refusing all requests. According to the US Consulate, to date, Iberostar is refusing to work with the authorities as well.

This is not a rant about the crime, nor the Judicial Process, in Mexico, but rather the Iberostar's refusal to do the right thing in order to protect future guests at their property.

Two winters ago, my good friend's cousin's 19 year old daughter (also from Saskatchewan) was raped at an Iberostar hotel in the Mayan Riviera by a security guard.

She was returning to her room after being at the disco or bar with other young adults from the resort- she was walking alone which in hindsight she should not have done.

She did not tell her parents until the next morning, they think she was in shock. (She was not drunk but had been drinking.) At the front desk they asked for their passports, got the manager to come and talk to them, and refused to call the police. They were due to go home the following day and were terrified they would not give them their passports back, it was their first trip to Mexico and they knew no Spanish at all. So they dropped it, and just came home to Canada....obviously one family with not-great memories of Mexico. :(

I am not certain which one it was, but I will be forwarding this to my friend. All I remember was it was an Iberostar.

And before anyone scoffs and says this is bogus, I can assure you it is not. I am no troll, we travel to Mexico about twice a year, I have no reason to make this up. I believe my friend and she says her cousin is a stable person and would not lie. She ended up getting tested for STDs and was clear and had to also take the morning after drug- no woman would willingly go through that for attention.

Thank-you for your post. Informwoman. These types of warnings can be very helpful in catching rapists.

Unfortunately, trying to get the word out after rapes/assaults is difficult when Trip Advisor shuts down the threads and/or other forums refuse the posts.

My sympathy goes out to these and all women who have been sexually assaulted.

I just came back from another resort on Tuesday. And even though no rape happened there my wife's girlfriend who stayed by herself got harrassing phone calls, and our room was enter without authorization. I also travel to Mexico twice a year, and this never happened to us. The management together with security denies everything. I will not be returning ever to this resort and for that matter most likely to Mexico. Let them get money from somebody else.

Somehow, I knew Sig would have a story. Might not be the appropriate thread to share it, ya think?

In answer to the question about why the poster did not go to the police. I believe the poster said that when she went to the front desk they refused to call the police and the entire procedure, as explained to the poster, sounded like the victim was made to feel at fault......I probably would have done the exact same thing. Think about it. You are in a country where there is likely a language barrier and travelling alone. Rapists walk around free everywhere even when there is overwhelming evidence against them. In fact, many, many women do not report crimes against them because they can't bear the trauma of having to relive the event- especially when justice may not be served. I am not a big fan of litigation but it almost seems like they are expecting to be sued anyway (by referring you to the insurance company) so I say sue the pants off of them.

Somehow I knew it that you are going to get involved here too. And this is not a story, this is truth. I have no reason to make up stories here. And what is your reason to come here to this thread and attack me?

Same here, when my wifes girlfriend asked to call the police, the front desk and the 'manager' refused. So now after rereading original post actually I believe her.
