I have not used Vimex but have rented privately owned condos in Playa. It's not unusual to pay all upfront. I was reluctant the first time also, but have never had a problem.
Yes, I have used Vimex. I had no problems with them and was happy to pay up front for my booking as it was at quite short notice. Their deposit was a lot of money, but I did get it all back on the morning of my departure.
I found them professional, quick to sort out minor problems, their cleaners are very good and I have no complaints. I would certainly use them again.
I too considered Planation House, but I wonder if it is possible to use aircon effectively with that style of window.
For my next trip to Playa I have decided to use Bric International. (vimex were pretty booked up for August) They have a large choice of condos. If you are booking last minute, you should be able to get a discount.

Never done Vimex. I too have booked with Bric International for rentals in Playa del Carmen.
