How much money to bring & travel tips for Playa del Carmen

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone may be able to advise (roughly) how much money (peso or dollars) I will need to take with me for 1 week in Playa del Carmen. Myself and a friend are staying in an all inclusive resort (RIU Lupita) and will be dining and drinking there, but want to go to cozumel, Coco Bongo and dine and drink on 5th ave maybe one or two nights.

I understand everyone is different in their spending, but an estimation would be great.

If you have any other advice on what to do in the area or tips for Mexico in general that would be great!!(Our first time travelling to Mexico)

Thanks! :-)

We used about 400 Pesos a day in tips at our AI as a couple. That can change depending on whether you do more buffet style dining or restaurant style.

As far as the outings you plan. It would be best for you to figure out exactly what your Cozumel tour will cost, Coco Bongo entry, and approximate cost of taxis, and have that money set aside. Then plan on how much "Spending" money you want for food and drinks.

I would estimate $75 USD per person for eats and drinks per day in PDC away from AI. Probably about $100 USD per person to do Cozumel for a day. Pretty sure Coco Bongo will be over $100 per person to do it the RIGHT way. You know with "special privileges", escort, special seating, etc.... Haven't been but a friend has several times and he says the "special privileges" is the only way to go, the cheap ticket likely will leave you disappointed. If you do some math and get Pesos it likely will cost up to 20% less. Retailers usually give poor exchange rate. Several ways to get Pesos, at your bank at home, cambio, atm in Mex, local Mexican bank. Read through TA and you will see what works best for you to get Pesos if you want to do that. Once I stopped to figure out the cost of using dollars at retailers in Mex, I quite doing that.

One more thing. Using your credit card where possible will get you the highest exchange rate. Most places in PDC will accept cards. Many in Cozumel will too. Pesos in your pocket will be very convenient.

I used 4500 dollars over 6 weeks that was like 20 trips did Tulum, Chechen itza, I loved Ek balam not many know about this one you can climb this temeple like Coba and have a beautiful king burial room as a reward of climbing, tequila and villiage trip, loads and loads of snorkling,

There the Captain Hook outing with steak lobster or surf n turf at 90-100 dollars really there so much you can do best to have a few extra dollars pesos if you like to do more

Have read about not using the stand-a-lone ATMs as they are most likely compromised. ONLY use atms that are at the banks. You can download an Ap for your phone that detects Bluetooth signal coming form the ATMS meaning something is fishy.

We usually take around £100 worth of pesos which we buy at home and then change English pounds to pesos as we need them at the Mexican bank while there. I've taken US dollars in the past, which you can use in the shops etc. but everything cost more in dollars than pesos. We usually walk to Playa del Carmen from our hotel in Playacar during the day and taxi back. From reading recent reviews it will cost the equivalent of £4 to £5 for a taxi back. It's too hot for me to walk on an evening if we are going down to town for drinks so a return taxi will cost between £8 to £10. I think the Riu Lupita will be either the same distance or a bit longer into Play del Carmen town. Drinks were pretty much the same as in the UK so factor in around £4 to £5 for a spirit and £2 to £3 for a small beer.

I think trips will cost around £100 and around the same into Coco Bongos. A meal will vary depending where you eat but I would factor in around £30 each per meal.

Sorry I'm giving these prices in pounds but I can't see what nationality you are and we usually work everything out in the comparison of UK pounds.

There are some lovely shops and stalls in town and you can get some good quality t shirts and costume jewellery. Remember to barter at the stalls though because they will often give you an initial price marked up by almost 100%. Have a wonderful holiday
