Safe for 2 single females to drive from Merida to PDC?

Hi, My daughter and I are planning a holiday in February. Instead of doubling back to Merida by doing Chichen Itza as a day tour from there, we thought of hiring a car when we leave Merida and driving to overnight at Chichen Itza and then see it early in the morning before the tour buses arrive before heading off to Playa del Carmen (or possibly Isla de Mujeres). We are Aussies so don't speak Spanish and are used to driving on the opposite side of the road (also can't drive a manual)- pretty much behind the eight ball! (though have successfully driven in California previously). Would appreciate an honest opinion on safety and practicality of this plan- together with costing. Thanks for your help

We switched because of much higher prices through Easyway, at least compared with America Car Rental. Same good service as Easy, but probably $50+ a week less. A lesser drop-off charge - if it is less - would of course help to offset that ...

All of the above sounds good. I really enjoy staying in Chichen at the Hacienda Chichen, however, and getting up very early to do a birdwatching walk with the local guide and then over to the ruins by around 8 a.m. The Hacienda is a short, less than 10 minute, walk from the ruins and is a lovely place to stay. Excellent food, service, gardens. And the birding is superb. You can arrange a private tour of Chichen Itza through the Hacienda and be back for a late breakfast as the tour buses arrive. Nothing like taking photos with only the ruins in them. Eerie and beautiful in the morning light.
