Toll Road between Cancun and Merida

We are renting a car at the Cancun airport for a short trip to Merida. How are the tolls collected, and what is the approx. cost each way? Can I pay in US$?

You will pay 251 pesos at the first booth and 146 at the second. Pesos are required and much better to use them in Merida. You are out of the tourist circuit. I hope you will spend some time in Merida. One of the most interesting places in this part of Mexico.

If the car is just for Merida, cancel the reservation and take the excellent deluxe bus service instead. There's plenty of info if you scroll back through the forums.

Inside Merida, a car is just a headache.

With all due respect to ViajeroPerdido, I completely disagree. For a short hop to Merida, a car is a necessity. I rent a car in Cancun almost every visit and drive to Merida. It takes a bit to get used to the public transport system in Merida, but a car is a car is a car. Driving can be stressful, but waiting for buses or getting on the wrong bus makes me mental when my time is short.

However, if you are spending several days. by all means take public transport. It will be a grand adventure.

Have a good trip!

If you are staying in a hotel, be sure to check the parking situation. Not always easy or inexpensive. I usually used the Dolores Alba when I had a car because of the easy, free self parking connected to the hotel.

After seeing what daily parking costs in San Francisco (80 USD) I laugh at the idea of parking in Merida being "expensive"!! Safe trip!

Of course, it is not as expensive as San Francisco, Bill. But I have friends who have thought it should be almost nothing because it is in Mexico. But laugh if you want.

I'm with Bill... parking in Merida? inexpensive and though it can be a pain in the centro at times, always possible. NOTHING like cities in the north...
