Favorite bar with botanas...

Looking to all the "local locos" for a little advice here. A nice not-so-touristy spot that offers up really cold beers with botanas, where the 2 of us can go and kick back for an hour or so. And if it's like asking about a fav fishing spot, maybe you could send me a PM...Por favor?

The local specialists are Eladios. See http://www.eladios.com.mx/4-1-%BFQuienes+somos%3F.html for more. There are several in Merida, along with one in Progreso.

At present we are shivering in the cold, so I feel confident that you'll have no problem finding a table available!

Another place where the locals go is Lucero del Alba on Calle 47 and 56...a block from the end of the Paseo Montejo. This place is not touristy at all.... You can sit around the bar or out back under the huge thatched roof palapa.

A huge Muchas Gracias! to both of you, and you can bet we'll be stopping in at both spots during our upcoming stay. But LIY - you must be too far removed from London. Freezing cold? Unless you're back in London, the temps in Merida were at least double what they had over there yesterday - and about 8 times what we had here, a -13C last night! Now that's "freezing cold."

Anyway guys, once again, thanks a lot...It was exactly the info I wanted...

You might also try La Ruina downtown, which is popular with the loco locals as well.

As for the cold weather, when you have become acclimatized to the Yucatan, you really feel it when it chills down. And it is as chilly as it has ever been here! Even former Canadians are shivering!

Not freezing, but shivering.

North American & European winter visitors to the Yucatan should be aware that recorded air temps can be misleading. The high levels of humidity (85-100%) make the temp feel much lower and the chill more penetrating. In addition, the houses have high ceilings & big windows which don't help when the temp drops.

This chill factor is greater on the coast where the breeze is far greater.

Sure, all of this shouldn't faze someone accustomed to truly cold winters, but equally 70°F here in January is not the same as 70°F on a summer's day in North America.

Have a great time during your stay.

And this morning, the Por Esto! newspaper reports ZERO degrees Celsius near Peto, which is not any place close to the beach, but it is the Yucatan. At this rate, snow is not completely out of the question.

Just to reassure the vacationers about to depart for the Yucatan...

A friend who is currently wintering in Progreso wrote me today that the high temperatures are supposed to back in the 90's later this week.

Weatherundergound which I usually find to be accurate shows one day , Friday , with high of 86, then back into the low to mid seventies for a high. According to them , thats due to a North wind arriving on Friday night.

I was in Merida 2 weeks ago, friends took my wife and I to " Lucero del Alba on Calle 47 and 56" on New year's eve (daytime), and we loved it.

Botanas were plentiful, and the beer (served in frosted mugs) , excellent.

Forgive my lack of spanish, but their version of a "black and tan", just a mix of a dark and light beer, was really good.
