Where to stay ?

Haven't been to Isla Mujeres since 89, when it was day trips and

"Pirates night" cruises.

Been to Cancun,Riviera Maya,Tulum and Cozumel and love Tulum and Maroma and being able to get into Playa Del Carmen.

Is Isla Mujeres worth staying a week, and if so where ? Just want someplace nice on the water and doesn't have to be AI.

I love Tulum and kind of liked Playa for the action & shopping, but last year happily spent a week just on Isla. Stayed at the Nautibeach condos on Playa Norte and had a blast checking out the restaurants in town each night. It was very windy in late February- March but the island is fun to explore if it isn't a beach day.

An idea of your budget would help because prices vary widely. Also, what are your preferences? Small, boutique type hotel? Large resort type hotel? Modern or tropical in feel? On or near the best swimming beaches or just with great water views and not necessarily on a great swimming beach?

For starters you could check out Posada del Mar (least expensive), Privilege Aluxes, Ixchel Condos, Nautibeach Condos, Maria's Cabanas del Mar (also relatively inexpensive) and Na Balam hotels. All are on the Cancun side of Isla with the best beaches for swimming and sunning. For a smaller, more boutique type hotel check out Secreto and Media Luna. While not on swimmable beaches, Playa Norte is just around the corner.

If you don't mind walking to beaches a beautiful boutique hotel is Casa Sirena, close to all restaurants, cafes, bars, etc., in Centrol.

If you give us a little more info, we could probably be a little more helpful :)

3. Re: Where to stay ?

We will have our first overnight trip to Isla in March. Like you, we have stayed all over the place on the mainland. For this trip, we really wanted a over the top room, beautiful beach, top notch ai services or walking distance to restaurants/bars. We didn't want to sacrifice the typical things you get at resorts - room service, swim up bar, drink service on the beach, large pool...

We decided on Privilege Aluxes. The prices are really good and even though we plan to eat out, the ai package is only $300 for the week. Check out their Platinum Suites - very nice and very reasonable. Since the ai is so inexpensive, we will have plenty left over in our budget to go out at night.

As far as budget we don't want to cut corners, and want a nice resort type setting. AI not a must because we love to venture out to restaurants bars etc.

We just returned from Tulum (Mezzanine) and Playa(The Tides) and Eldorado Maroma and the largest resort had 72 rooms and the smallest had 10 rooms, one was AI and liked or loved them all.

Good beach and room a plus with good service etc.

Then I would recommend that you check out Privilege Aluxes, Ixchel Condos, and Villa Rolandi. The last one is just beautiful, more like a boutique hotel with excellent service and one of the best restaurants. While it is not in Centro, it's easy and inexpensive to get cab service if you feel like dining out or going into town for some night life. For walking distance convenience to Centro PA and Ixchel has the advantage.

Just got back and stayed at Privilege Aluxes. Great rooms and includes nice breakfast. Also best beach on the Island is right there.

Isla Mujeres is definitely worth a weeks stay. The island is just a great place to stay with plenty to offer anyone. Not a "spring break" atmosphere but plenty to do day and night. We stayed at Privilege last December and it was a nice place. It was still going through some growing pains but I hear those have been worked out. We went cheaper this coming trip and are staying at Posada Del Mar. New Years Eve down there is just a cool way to ring in the new year.
