Thinking about cancelling stay at PA . . .

The closer it gets to my vacation, the more I am thinking that I should switch hotels :( I originally chose PA for a few reasons:

1. AI option: it was not much more than the non-AI and my mom is traveling with me and has an injured foot - on the days she didn't feel like she could get around, we would be set for food and drink

2. Grand Platinum Suite w/roof top pool: again, because of my mom's foot, we could relax right at our room and take a quick dip when needed (I realize the "pool" is not for swimming)

3. Location: right on (well, across the beaten path) the beach

My concerns are that we booked through a 3rd party site and it appears that lately those upgraded room bookings have not been honored. Although I am a very laid back traveler, not getting the room I paid for would really tick me off. I also have concerns about the level of service that people who choose AI receive - while I certainly do not expect anyone to fawn all over me :) I don't want to beg for a glass of water. Finally, on a few other sites that I follow, there seems to be a number of issues with being double charged at check out.

Sooooo . . . I have just a day or two to figure out what I am going to do here. I could probably cancel and rebook the same room and take the non-AI option, which kind of defeats my purpose of choosing PA and still could have the other problems. Or, I could simply cancel the reservation all together and choose something else (assuming I can find something available).

Any opinions and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I assume by double charge you mean that people have prepaid the entire trip then during check out they were charged again. That can easily be dealt with as long as you have your papers with you showing that you have already paid. That wouldn't stop me from staying there. But I would definitely call the hotel and express the concern about the room and see what they say. If you paid for a platinum suite, that is the room you should be getting.

Difficult call on the service; some reviews raved others said it lacked, so it's hard to say what level of service you'll experience but that is true of any hotel/resort you may stay at. Service depends on the particular worker, the guest, the level of expectation, etc., so one person's experience may not be what another experiences.

But If your reason for choosing AI (and hence PA) was strictly because of your mother's foot, just about any other hotel with a restaurant on the premises should do. So if you're really concerned about PA honoring your room request and worried about the level of service, then maybe consider rebooking in another hotel that is on the beach and has a restaurant. Nautibeach condos are right on Playa Norte and its restaurant, the Sunset Grill, is popular and serves good food. Na Balam is also on Playa Norte and has a restaurant.

We spent a wonderful week at PA in January after booking with Expedia for standard rooms and then upgrading directly with the hotel. The reservations were honored without hassle, and the upgrade charge was just added to our checkout. I found the people at the hotel to be polite and accommodating. We have already booked a return for next January and have been dealing with the hotel manager directly to arrange room upgrades. Here is her email address:

So far she has been very responsive.

I stayed at PA and didnt have ANY problems... with anything (check in, check out, service, billing, my room, etc....) Another reason to stay there that would be a good thing for the person traveling with you that has an injury.... they do have room service - always good if you dont even feel like leaving the balcony or room! :-)

also, when i booked my room thru Expedia, i got such a good deal that i really questioned it.... i was concerned that i would get there and that the hotel wouldnt honor the "deal" i got so here is what i did: I emailed the hotel directly to CONFIRM all the details of my reservation, the catagory of my room and the all-inclusive plan and what all it entailed, that way there were no suprises when i arrived! Got there and all was GREAT!!! My expectations were exceeded. We are looking for a date to return now!

Thanks everybody! Maybe I'm just a little nervous because while I have been to Cancun tons of times, this is my first trip to IM (never even did a day trip). Plus, I have the added stress of trying to make it a great trip for my mom . . . if it was just me, I would be happy no matter where I was staying :) However, you know that whole silent judging thing that moms do. If she starts giving me those on day one of the trip, there will not be enough alcohol in all of IM to level me out!

Thanks again and I will see those folks who will be there starting on Saturday!

It's always stressful worrying about making another person happy but I'm sure she'll be pleased with both the hotel and Isla. Rent a golf cart, tour around, relax on the beach or by the pool, have a few margaritas, and have a great time :)

Momof6:

I personally would not stay at PA. My husband and I travel twice a year to Mexico. We stayed at PA in the fall of 2009 along with three other couples. My reasons are the following:

Food was not good, no top shelf liquor, nothing to do, not on the beach and the management was NOT of 5 star quality. (maybe 21/2 star)

My sister in law was severely injured at the resort (spent the night in the hospital) and when she went home she needed surgery. She was injured as a direct result of their negligence and lack of maintaning their property in a safe manner for guests. To date, she is still unable to walk. They have ignored letters and calls from her. POOR business. Since your mom already has an injured foot, I suggest to you find another place and STAY AWAY from PA.

We have stayed at Excellence Playa Murjeres and their other resorts and by far they are MUCH better than PA. What a mistake we made by staying there. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

We stayed at PA and had a great experience. I went with the same worries about the reservation, but had no trouble. But just in case, I had all my information printed out and ready to show if there were any problems. I booked through an on-line travel service, too.

Food-- really, if it's not much more to do AI and it gives you an option for room service, a lunch on the beach, and peace of mind....probably worth doing. There's also Jax directly across the street if that isn't too far to walk. Another option is for you to bring back food to your room from restaurants in the area. The suites are huge with big decks that make lounging in the evening very nice.

Not sure about the previous poster's experience with poor maintanence and the accident, but what I saw was a hotel that was keep impeccably clean and was well maintained. My experience traveling to other countries is that most do not have the same stringent safety requirements of US building codes, regulations, etc. So, I am never suprised when I see something that a business couldn't get away with here.

Good luck!!
