Sundays on Isla

Like most travelers, we'll be arriving on a Saturday and I was thinking of spending our first full day (Sunday) renting a golf cart and exploring the island to get our bearings. This would perhaps include breakfast at Mango, snorkeling at Garrofon de Castilla, lunch at El Pueblito, etc. Are most restaurants and other activities open on Sundays? Golf carts available? Is Sunday a good day to do this? What specific advice do you have for Sunday? (We'll be there the 1st week of September).

I am not sure about El Pueblito, but Mango Cafe and Garrafon de Castilla are certainly open on Sunday. The only downside to your plan is that when the good beach weather arrives (as it has now), Isla's tourist day-trippers are augmented on Saturday and Sunday by Cancun residents who also like to take a "beach day" on their day off. So if your trip is within the next 6 months, do come early in the day to beat the long lines at the ferry. And if your trip is soon, note that Isla will draw loads of Mexican tourists this Sunday (Easter) and next, because Mexican schools are on vacation.

We're staying on Isla so the ferry isn't in play here. In previous trips to the Yucatan (and elsewhere) we've found fewer day trippers on weekends because they're either traveling or it's their first day, although there are more locals. Cruise boats tend to arrive in ports midweek. So I'm more concerned about what's open on Sundays, or activities that may happen on Sundays only. And we'll be there the first week of September.

Can't speak of El Pueblito specifically but pretty much everything is open on Sundays except for the restaurant Olivia's.

September is the S-L-O-W-E-S-T month on the island for tourism, and many establishments have reduced hours -- or close altogether -- as a result. Last September with the swine flu scare and the recession, business was so bad that some restaurant operators just took the month off...and some never re-opened. I can't predict what will be open or not this September... but you will always find somewhere to stop and eat as you tour --- and the views alone are definitely worth the trip.
