Whale Shark Tour

We’ll be visiting Cozumel soon and would like to go see the whale sharks! From our understanding, this is more the Cancún/Isla Mujeres area. Just seeing if anyone here had a company they’d recommend? Not sure if it’s best to make our own way to the Cancún area or if it’d be easier to arrange a tour with transportation from Playa. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks!!

Search this forum for someone who leads tours from Cozumel. Search for "whale shark"

Or you can get to Isla Mujeres on your own.

Holbox is the place. Just off the coast of the Yucatan West of Cancun. One of the operators: Not a recommendation, just for info.

We did a whale shark tour twice out of Isla Mujeres. We used On Isla Mujeres both times and highly recommend them.

"Isn't the vis better off Isla Mujeres compared to Holbox?"

Tough to predict ocean conditions, though after having done both, the Isla Mujeres location did indeed have much better visibility. It's also a LOT easier to get to than Holbox. However, Holbox is a fascinating island so if I were to do it again, I'd stay overnight and explore a bit more. So lovely with amazing wildlife.

We did this last year from Isla in mid July. There were lots of Whale Sharks. We went with On Isla Waters and they were fantastic. I highly recommend staying on Isla to do this, Swimming with the Whale Sharks is exhilarating and exhausting! We loved every minute of it. :)
