My Lonely Plantet says that the time the book was published there were plans for a special bus service from the airport to the in-town bus terminal. Is this true? If so, where at the airport do I find the bus? We want to go to Merida. I assume there is no bus that goes directly from the airport to Merida. Thanks.

Last April we travelled from Cancun airport to Merida by bus. When you leave the airport with all your bags etc. you will pass by all the time share sharks and transportation options. Keep your head down and ignore them all and keep walking till you are outside. Once outside turn to your right and walk all the way down to the end of the buses. These will be the buses to the main bus terminal in Cancun city ( not the beach and hotel zone ). It is only a few dollars and about a 30 min ride to the terminal. Once at the terminal you need to go inside and purchase a ticket for Merida. I would suggest a first class bus. It is not expensive, is very comfortable and a 4 hour ride to Merida. If you have other questions just ask. Also, there are bus experts in the Merida forum as well. Enjoy Merida, it is a beautiful city.

Thanks for the quick reply. Another quick question since you liked Merida. How much time should I plan for there?

It all depends on your interests I guess. How long are you in the Yucatan and what are your other travel plans? Merida can easily be quickly explored in 2 or 3 days. The town center with its cathedral and museums etc. But there are cultural events such as traditional dances in the plaza every day. So in theory you could see a different event each day and night for a week. Sunday ( Merida en Domingo ) is a great day to visit with the main central streets closed to car traffic. Museums are closed on Mondays.

The ADO bus service from the Cancun airport to the ADO terminal is frequent and very comfortable. You will also find frequent ADO first class and ADO GL buses to Merida. Both are excellent with the GL service a step up providing much legroom, two bathrooms, a coffee bar, headphones for music and movies, etc.

Merida is one of my favorite cities . So much to see and do with many fine restaurants for every taste. If possible, spend a weekend there when all the center streets are shut down with much entertainment , food booths, etc. A fun time.

Hi juliest

I just came back last week and asked at the ADO bus sales booth about the location for their departures to Cancun Bus station and to the Playa del Carmen one

The lady explained that terminal 2 has buses leaving for Cancun and Playa and terminal 3 only to Playa del Carmen.

Since most probably you are arriving at terminal 3 you will have to go to your right, take the shuttle to terminal 2 and then from there take the bus to Cancun Bus station. Where you can then take the bus to Merida. Look for the ADO representative.

Have fun! and Enjoy your trip.
