We tried to bring matches from our hotel back with us and they confiscated them at the airport. We wanted a souvenir from the Riu. I guess the postcards will have to do. :)

Yes it's true that you can't carry lighters on the plane. A friend got them taken away.

Here's some information from the Cancun Airport website:

"As a rule of thumb you are allowed to bring into Mexico whatever you need for the time period you will be staying in Mexico. You are not allowed to bring food, fruits and/or products that are not "company" packed and sealed. And if you are bringing food or products they are allowed only if you need them because of a special diet or for medical reasons. The same rule applies to medicine. You are allowed to bring enough medicine for the time period you will be in Mexico. If you are bringing an unusual quantity of medicine please bring a doctor's prescription just in case you need to prove the medicine is for your own consumption."

And here's information about what cannot be placed in carry-on luggage (from Northwest Airline's website):

"Do Not Pack: In carry-on luggage

Fireworks: Signal flares, sparklers or other explosives, freon or helium

Flammable Liquids, Gases or Solids: Fuel, paints, lighter refills, matches. NOTE: Effective April 14, 2005 the Transportation Security Administration will ban all lighters beyond security check points at the airport as well as onboard all aircraft.

Household Items: Bleach, adhesives, linseed oil spray starch, insecticides, drain, bathroom or oven cleaners and solvents

Pressure Containers: Spray cans, butane, fuel, scuba tanks, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, CO2 cartridges, self-inflating rafts. . .

Miscellaneous Items: Knives of any length (except rounded blade butter knives and plastic cutlery), cutting instruments of ANY kind including carpet knives, box cutters and folding or retractable blades regardless of length, ice picks, straight razors (safety/disposable razors ARE allowed), and scissors (metal, with pointed tips)"

According to the TSA website, you are allowed 4 packets of matches pp, NOT safety matches which can be struck anywhere, only book matches. No lighters either in checked luggage or carry on

How about curved fingernail scissors and corkscrews?

You can bring corkscrews in carry-on, but the sissors can't be metal with pointy ends. You can bring safety razors in your carry-on.
