Hmm... Wish I could help... Snorkeling in Fiji was awesome. You should go there for your trip.

I think the new reef (actually any reef) would be better than the one we visited.

We took a similar tour a few years back. It was $65, and we rode two each to these small boats that were very slow. We followed each other through the mangroves (jungle) that eventually led under a bridge out to a bay where a whole slew of boats were tied off. I wouldn't do it again. We did not see many pretty fish, maybe 2-3 clown fish and a small bright blue one. The rest were rather large and kept nipping at our fingers and bathing suits. We weren't wearing any jewelry, so we thought maybe the fish were used to being fed. Can't even remember if a meal was included or not.

Just wasn't our cup of tea. Too many people splashing and flailing around in one small area, and the water was a bit murky.

Funny that they say it is a "new" reef its been there forever. It is exactly were you described and does have a lot of Marine life however there is almost always very strong current there when we go I usually hang on to a line off the end of our boat so as to stay in place to be able to see.

BNbrewer go to the north point of Isla Mujeres and walk out in front of the Avalon stay on the west side of the rocks and there is plenty to see and you don't need a guide or a boat.
