canyon del sumidero

hi guys , we arrive at Tuxtla guttierez airport at about 10.30am on a saturday in november. we'd like to visit the Canyon del sumidero and chiapa de corzo and it makes more sense to do it from Tuxtla but we've already booked 3 nights accommodation in San cristobal de las casas. id it worth doing a seperate half day just for this or do you think it will be possible to do it when we arrive in tuxtla by a tour company (because we will have our luggage) then return to tuxtla and take a bus to San Cristobal afterwards. what do you think? thanks guys!

Hi demore

I think its OK , first go to San Cristobal, y rest from the fly, and see the town, then the next day go to Cañon del sumidero it´s a short ride from san cristobal, the the next day you can go to laguna de montebello or maybe palenque, and take a tour you can ejoy the ride, when you arrive to tuxtla gutierrez take a bus to san cristobal , it´s more cheap . Hope you have a good vacation !

I went from Tuxtla to Chiapa de Corzo by bus, they're very close. Then walked down to the embarcadero and did the boat ride. Then took a colectivo on to San Cristobal de las Casas. It's all very doable by public transport, but I did it with a backpack only, no luggage. Plus the colectivos to San Cristobal do not stop inside Chiapa de Corzo, you must get out to the highway to catch them. If you decide to do it, I can give more details.

Another option -- TGZ is actually very close to Chiapa de Corzo. You could hire a taxi there and have him take you to Chiapa de Corzo, wait for you while you do the Canyon tour, then drive you on to San Cristobal.

It's about 500-600 pesos from TGZ to San Cristobal. So more than that.

TGZ is a little south of Chiapa de Corzo. So although it is the airport for Tuxtla there is no reason to go to Tuxtla at all. You would drive right by Chiapa de Corzo on your way to San Cristobal.

It's probably easier to just head to San Cristobal and then do a tour back to the Canyon as suggested. It's only if you have really limited time that you might try to do it the other way. You'd save a few hours driving time, probably.

Palenque is NOT a day trip from San Cristobal!
