San cristobal to palenque

I'm traveling with two teenage grandchildren. The tours are way to costly for us. How can I get to Palenque the most economical way from San Cristobal and back in a day?

Also to the village of Oventic.

I would be grateful for any info. Thanks

Forget about going there and back in a day. The comfortable OCC buses do the trip one way in 6 hours, which includes a half-hour stop at Ocosingo along the way.

Thanks for the info. Now I'm bummed out. The tour agency's offer a day trip that is cost prohibitive for 4. so I was hoping I could do it myself.

Would you settle for the Tonina ruins, which are outside Ocosingo? That's only half as far from SC as Palenque is, which would make it about 3 hours.

I haven't been to Tonina, but the Moon Chiapas book calls them a "terrific hillside ruin" with an "outstanding" site museum. Apparently it's under-appreciated.

There are also smaller ruins even closer to SC.

Hope that helps.

We'll be there 11 days so we may try Tonina but the heart is set in Palengue. I was in Palenque ten years ago but really wanted the kids to see it.

You have eleven days. It's worth two for Paleque. The agency must be cramming you in a car and driving like mad for an hour or two at the ruins. Plus you don't drive that road fast.

Thanks, I'd heard their was a new road that cut the time in half but I guess we'll be doing an overnight.

How about the Zapatista town of Oventik. Have you heard of a tour there? It's supposed to be where you might meet Subcommandante Marcus.
