What parts of Mexico are not safe?

We drove through Mexico in our own vehicle. A mexican tourism guide gave us a good route to follow (including but not limited to): Puerto Vallarta, Guadajara, Leon, Pueblo City, Oaxaco, San Cristol de las Carcas. We are now heading back to the US border and would like to know where not to go due to safety. We know that Chihualua is not a safe place. Are there other places that we should not go?

There are many safe routes and even on the unsafe ones you are extremely unlikely to meet any danger. Generally I would still avoid Tamaulipas state. If going to Texas take the 57 all the way to Saltillo and then Monterrey, cross at Laredo. Eagle Pass is also fine. Anywhere west of there is good too.
