Hi All,
I'm looking for a traveller friendly, safe accomodation whilst in Mexico city for 2 nights before heading to the east coast. Can anyone suggest a good travellers hostel or hotel if need be. Interested in the Condesa and colonia Roma areas.

Esera,
In a post by Muñecadoll a few days ago, Karlos Miguel suggested the Hotel Roosevelt. It's in Colonia Condesa and priced right. Check out the website. Current exchange rate is around 11 pesos per U. S. dollar.

Just two blocks north of the Metropolitan Cathedral, in the "Historic Center" of the city is a very nice, new, clean little hotel called the Hotel Catedral which charges about 500 pesos/night if you pay cash. East of there, on Calle Moneda, is the Hostel Catedral which costs less. Both are within easy reach of the Zócalo Metro station with rapid transit to any part of the city..
Don't let any nervous Nellies discourage you from the Zócalo area. It's been the heart of the city since 1325, and well worth seeing. The Turibus stop is at the west entrance of the Cathedral, and a good choice for a short visit.
The Turibus service operates on a circular route from Chapultepec Park to the Historic Center of the City. The tour takes a little less than 3-hours and operates between 9am and 9pm. Tickets cost 100 pesos for adults and are available only on board the bus. The web site: http://64.78.37.75/turibus/recorrido_turistico_df.html
Hop on early (9am) and get a seat on top, but this time of the year, with the sun directly overhead or a little to the north, a hat and long sleeves are a good idea.
There are good/inexpensive places to stay in mostly-residential Colonia Roma, which is a much safer/more interesting to many neighborhood than Centro Historico. Most of what there is to see/do in Mexico City is not located in the Zocalo area, and, after dark, the zone is considered somewhat unsafe.
