24 Hour Layover

Arriving in Mexico City around 9am on a monday and flying out about the same time next day. Obviously not much time to see the city as we will only have the one afternoon.

I am looking for locations and or ideas as to the best way to spend our short time there. Right now we are considering staying in the Zocala but wondering if a neighborhood with a more local, less touristy vibe would be better for a mature couple.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Hi,

Zocalo is a good option if you only have 24 hrs. There are a few pedestrian streets like Madero, Regina ,Motolinia to walk around plus main attractions like National Palace, Fine arts museum, the Cathedral , Templo Mayor...If you choose another neighborhood you will lose time

Check out the "Top Question": What can I do on a layover. I would think the zocalo, cathedral, national palace, templo mayor (all on or around the zocalo) would easily fill your time. Where you actually stay doesn't matter a great deal because taxis are cheap and convenient.

Bear in mind the museums etc are all closed on Mondays. But you will be able to see the templo mayor from the outside, visit the cathedral and maybe the national palace with its Diego Rivera murals, as well as just walk the streets.

Despite being a tourist attraction, the Zocalo and the area around it is as local as it gets. You can really immerse yourself in the local culture, both present and past, in a few hours.

Sounds great, thanks for the confirmation. Sorry to hear the Museums will be closed, I guess we'll just have to plan more time next trip :)

Does anyone have a favorite resturant in the area, or somplace that shoud not be missed ?

Gracias a todos, y Feliz Ano Nuevo!

Try Cafe Tacuba - see reviews on TA - beautiful historic house, musicians, great atmosphere, always packed so you might have to wait a bit but not too long. Only Spanish menus however so better if you speak or at least read Spanish.

Azul Centro in the Hotel Downtown on Isabel La Catolica is fantastic - great scene, great food. it is one block from the Zocalo (in front of the historic Casino Español.) Hotel is fun to walk around too -the first floor has all these fun shops selling only in Mexico items.
