what area?

Been doing some research on Mexico City, planning a weeks stay in late January.

Which would be the best area for us to stay? We want to see the sights during the day but in the evening would like to be able to walk to restaurants, cafes and bars for our meals and entertainment. For our day trips we would love to see a few towns around the city and the major sites the city has to offer.

From there we are heading to Zihua.

Any advice on areas, hotels, restaurants and things not to miss would be great!

Our budget is anything under $100 a night for hotel. We just like a clean room as we don't spend a lot of time in it when we are exploring. And for restaurants we love all cuisines and prefer non upscale places.

Thanks

Condesa or Roma is nice walking at night with plenty of restaurants etc. Red Tree House is recommended frequently. Polanco is more upscale and may be beyond your budget but worth looking too, maybe try priceline on a multi-star property there.

If you cannot afford the RTH, a less expensive option (in Roma) is the Hotel Milano. Roma and Condesa are by far the nicest areas to stay. Polanco is boring.

Why don't you look around the American embassy? there are at least 2 places I remember, Pension Gonzalez on Sena river st acroos the British embassy and Hotel Maria Cristina on Lerma river st, both are clean and nice, with small charming patios and the later with a garden and only one block off Reforma Boulevard.
